If we Canadians, along with the rest of the world, escape the awfulness of a third world war, the main credit goes to the U.S.S.R. and the socialist camp. The existence of a strong and power- ful U.S.S.R. has been the main force frustrating the efforts of the imperial- ists to go to war, to retain their colonial empires, and to hold back human pro- gress. : The U.S.S.R. has stood resolutely on the side of all peoples seeking indepen- dence, progress and peace, giving un- selfishly of its worldly goods and the lives of its Soviet peoples, as no other nation has done. The existence of the U.S.S.R., its in- spiring achievements, has influenced every economic and political event on the globe, including our life here in Can- ada. The contrast between the constant- ly improving life of the working people in socialist lands, in comparison to the constantly worsening life of the work- ing people under capitalism, is a factor in the political and economic struggles shaping up in our country. Many new countries can thank the existence of the U.S.S.R. and the social- ist camp for the fact that the imperial- ists did not unleash major intervention against them. Such help rendered the Vietnamese is a factor in their success- ful struggle against U.S. imperialism. This is one of the new factors in the possibility of a “peaceful” path to so- cialism. Coe ‘The Soviet people, the first to build socialism, have now set themselves the goal of communism. The Program of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union says, “Communism accomplishes the historic mission of delivering all men from social inequality, from every form of oppression and exploitation, from the horror of war, and proclaims peace, labor, freedom, equality, frater- nity and happiness for all peoples of the earth.” On this birthday we express our firm conviction that the Soviet peoples will successfully build that society — the highest form of civilization which alone assures boundless social progress and the satisfaction of the material and spiritual needs of all men. Trudeau opens war Monopoly’s chief spokesman, Prime Minister Trudeau, continues his attack on the people’s living standards, de- manding that labor and capital both “voluntarily” agree to controls, or else the government will act. This is a threat against the working people. Capitalist pro aganda distorts the truth so as to make it appear as though the working people enjoy the same benefits and power as the capitalists. Business agrees quickly to so-called “restraints” because it has never known a sunnier period. In 1967, the Financial Post carried a revealing article regarding th e enorm- |
