Anne Wright, the manag- er and early childhood edu- cator with Kitselas Head- start, was one of two people honoured by the BC Aborig- inal Child Care Society Nov. 18-in Richmond. The reward itself was | “a recognition of Wright’s “outstanding service and " contributions “to ‘Aboriginal : children i in B.C.” For Wright, . who has worked in her position since 2001, the nod came as a shock. ae ® “Twas quite surprised and honoured — I was over- whelmed,” Wright said upon ” her return. “I felt honoured because I'm from Kitselas... to come this far for the community and the children.” Wright became certified " in early childhood education from Northwest Community College before the Head- start initiative was ‘offered - ' in Kitselas so she took a job _ Last of pioneer famil HOW SAD, another page of Terrace’s history has come -to an end. The last’ of the © Frank family passed away ‘on Nov. 12 at Terraceview Lodge. Mildred May Theadora Wood (Frank) was born to Mattie and Henry Frank on May 30, 1921 at Prince Ru- . pert Hospital. Mildred was ° the youngest of seven chil-. dren: Leulla, Ivan, Floyd, Belle, Jack, Dorothy and Mildred. The Frank family . were among the first settlers to arrive in the valley. | YVONNE MOEN Mildred spent her child- hood days in Terrace and > attended classes at the Old Kitsumkalum School. She completed her education in Vancouver and trained as a nurse’s aid. Upon gradua- tion, Mildred returned to the North taking a position at Wrinch Memorial Hospital in Hazelton. After a short courtship .they mar- ried in Vancouver on June 1946. While residing . in Prince Rupert, daughter Joyce was born. | . The Wood family moved - to Terrace after residing in Port Alberni for three years. Their: second child, Robert, was born in 1955.— also in: Prince Rupert. Mildred was “widowed in 1970 with Don- ald’s passing. | It was while she was » living. in, Prince . George ~ and working. as a cook that. - Mildred: met her partner ‘Phil Leib. Mildred and Phil spent their retirement years together at the Twin River “Estates surrounded by fam- ily and. friends.., Mildred © ‘often spoke of . her days‘as“a”chef working ' at Woolworths and K-Mart. These were special times in her life. Friends could always find her whipping up her tasty cheesecakes at Woolworth’s! Meeting many new friends there was special for Mildred. Mildred is’ remembered by her family as a lov- . ing mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and sister-in-law. I do remember when Robert . was"born.'1 would.be about © 12 and was very excited to _hear there was a new baby in the family. I recall my dad taking me with him on the milk route and we made a stop in at Aunty Mildred’s to see the new baby. I was ‘thrilled as I hadn’t seen a new baby since my young brother arrived several years earlier. “Whenever I went to Terrace to visit my mother (Aileen Frank), 1 always enjoyed a nice visit with my Auntie Mildred and she would offer a hot cup of tea and some of her delicious baking. I was very fond of my Aunty Mildred and will miss her very much.” Her sister-in-law Aileen Frank says she and Mildred had some pleasant times to- gether, such as their trip to Hawaii. “J had never been to Hawaii, so in the mid ‘90s Mildred and I went to Maui. - We went on various sight- seeing tours, walked the beaches, went to a.-Luau and had some nice meals out. We had a very memorable time together. Well, living at the Twin River Estates we enjoyed many good times’ together. I appreciated her company and was sad to hear of her passing.” - Mildred resided at the -Twin River.
