B4 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, January 10, 1996 A really cold shower EVEN IN a warm bathroom, a cold shower usually causes shocked screams. Just imagine what an ice-cold shower, outside ina blizzard might feel like. About 25 cold-blooded people found out, when they volunteered for the Kermode Bear Swim, on New Ycar’s Day: The an- nual event, sponsored by the Kinsmen, traditionally in- volves a dip in the freezing waters of Lakelse Lake, but the ice-conditions forced organizers to change their plans, ‘The ice was really slushy and didn’t cut well,’’ ex- plained organizer Bruce Martindale, ‘'So we tried to bring the lake to us.’? The Kinsmen brought a wooden box, the size of roomy hot tub, and tried to Gill it with freezing lake water, but the box kept leaking. So instead of a swim, the New Year's bathers had whal looked like a really unpleasant shower. “Everybody felt that a cold shower in the middie of a Dlizzard was good enough,”’ said Martindale. One bather appeared to find the weather mild, and wandered around for at Icast fen minutes in just a thin coal and swim trunks, caus- ing bundled-up spectators to speculate about his mental health. Martindale. The Kinsmen raised ap- proximately $2,500-3,000 in pledges for their rehabilita- tion fund. Martindale said the Kinsmen were particu- larly impressed by the fundraising efforis of 13- year-old Mike Law. **He raised $317.32,’" said Overall, the Kinsmen were pleased with the amount of bathers and spectators who showed up, considering that the day’s weather conditions had led many to speculate the event might have to be cancelled, Around Town Mothers’ March THE KINSMEN have al- ready raised close to $3,000 locally for the Kinsmen Re- habilition Foundation with the kermode bear swim (well, shower) on New Year’s Day. Now organizers are hoping ihe community will continue to be gencrous with donations to the Kins- men Mothers’ March. Canvassers will be in your neighbourhood January 15- 31, collecting money for the charity. Money raised from the annual march will be used to help British Colum- bians who have physical disabilities achieve a more independent lifestyle, The Mothers’ March is co- sponsored by the BC and Yukon Community News- papers Assocation, of which the Terrace Standard is a member.
