The Herald, Wednesday, January 25, 1984 Triathlon not for weak-willed { Now, ‘about the triathlon, abit of madness that causes otherwise. average citizens to swim, cycle and run 140.6 miles. It is an exercise which is not designed for the weak-willed. You start: with a little ocean swim lasting | 2.4 miles. Then switch to cycling, 112 miles worth. * Now you're ready for the a marathon final event, race, A mere 26 miles, 385 yards later, you can. stop. Any of the three events alone is impressive. All three together are special. * Each October, Hawaii is host to the Iron’ Man: Triathlon. Now, however, they ought to cali it the Iron Person Triathlon: The sex barriers have fallen, thanks first to Lyn Lemaire, a Harvard Law graduate, and | recently to the Puntous twins of Montreal — Sylviane and Patricia — and to Millie Brown, who turned her 40th birthday into a crusade for fitness. Lemaire is publisher of Ultrasport, described as ‘‘a more’ magazine for the serious endurance athlete.” And the - triathlon serious, but, she said, not as tough as some of the events she’s tried. NO BIKE RIDE . . “This event is easier than the 12-hour bike ride,” Lemaire said. ‘‘The first eight miles of the marathon are a relief fram hunchigg over the bike for 62 miles.” Now why would an otherwise normal person submit to the demands of the triathlon? Lemaire just ¢ smiled, “If you can't go faster, you try to go further,” she said. ““Fhat’s one reason. ‘“Another is to bry more sports, It contributes to mental freshness. There's no chance to get bored.” The Puntous twins have brought a new dimension to . the triathlon. They worked up to the 1983 event’ by winning almost ©. every distance event they com- peted in during the year, crossing the finish © line - together. They became known as Government denies | Pan-Am VANCOUVER (CP) — The provincial government Tuesday turned down a request that it put up nearly, $8 million toward the cost of holding’ the 1991 -Pan- American games in Van- couver. But the city’s chances of hosting the games aren't completely dashed yet, said George Moriitt of the local Pan-American « Games investigative: . committee since the deadline has been exténded ‘to iMay-31, 1984. The cominittee, set up. two years ago, coricluded that holding the games for 4,500 «University : 4 OE. request athletes from North, Central and South America would cost $22-million — $8 million in capital and $14 million in operating: costs. - It hoped to get one third from the federal govern- ment, one third from the province, $3 million from the city and the rest from other sources. . Morfitt said the proposal was. to upgrade existing facilities like . Empire Stadium and the pool at the - Columbia: --The- only new facility needed is a velodrome. , certainly — is’ the Stereo Twins and moved their training base to Bass . Lake, Calif. ; It appeared they would repeat in the triathlon, running away side-by-side from the other women in the field, when | Patricia's . bicycle’ ran over’ some carpet tacks strewn along the road course, Sylviane went on to win the race and Patricia followed in second place five minutes later, both shattering the previous best time by a woman competitor, ‘ADVERSARY | WITHIN’ “The real adversary is within,” says Lemaire. “There’s a little goblin who keeps poking up his head. and saying Stop!’ “But once you make -up your mind that you're going . to do it, nothing stops you from doing it. How fast i is another question.” Really, though, fast is not the question at all. Finish Golfers. TORONTO (CP) — “Jim.
