Coquitlain RCMP are starting a program of
bicycle safety in which all bicycle riders will be
ticketed and fined fer riding at night without
lights,

The program, to be launched this week by
Corporal R. H. Hamilton of the traffic
deparunent, reflects a concern about bicycle
safety felt by most Jawer Mainland
detachments, he said,

Charges will be taid under Section 173 of tue
Motor Vehicle Act, which requires that a
bicyele operated between a half-hour after
sunset and a half-hour before sunrise be
equipped with Eechts,

The bicycle must also he equipped with "a
lighted lamp tnounted on the front capable of
dispayins a white hight vicuile under normal

atmospheric conditions at least 506 feet ahead
of the bicycle."

On’ the rear a red reflector or lamp is
required, as well as at least nine inches of the
mudguard painted white.

Cpl. Hamilton emphasized that recent
traffic fatahties involving bicycles have also
involved newspaper carrier boys.

The fine for riding without proper
equipment will be $10, he said, and juveniles
(under 17 years) cannot pay the fine out of
court,

This means they would have to appear in
juvenile court with at Jeast one purent, he
explained.

The ticketing pregram will continue for the
next month.
