THE COMMUNITY Readers and Writers pro- gram is up and minning again for its second year. The program matches Volunteer tutors with people who want some help with their reading and writing skills, The help can be as simple as filling out a form or writ- ing a letter, or could take the form of: regular tutor ses- sions. Problems with reading and | wriling are very common, affecting two out of every five adults, Some people can’t read to their children or read direc- tions on a medicine bottle, Other people can’t write a letter or cheque, or fill out forms. Not being able to read doesn’t mean a person isn't intelligent. It just means ‘ they’re missing some read- ing skills, Tuat’s where Community Readers and Writers comes in. The program is funded by Northwest Community College and the National © Literacy Secretariat. There’s a new coordinator in charge this year — Lynn Patierson. . She moved here from Toronto, where she taught French and English as a Second Language in high » Ae tet LOOKING FOR TUTORS — Lynn Patterson is look- ‘ing for volunteer tutors to help with the Community Readers and Writers Program. The tutors will go through a short training session in the beginning of October, then will be paired up with students. school. Patterson also taught ESL in Europe for three years. Patterson’s first priority is Tutors aim to improve literacy to develop a way to casily assess what level students are at, Then she can work with a tutor to develop a way to help the student reach his or her goal. Palterson’s second priority is to put together a small li- brary of resources for tutors. As the program is just in its second year, there’s not much there yet, she says. She’s looking for tutors _ how aid hopes to recruit them by the beginning of October. That’s when she’ll hold four two-hour training sessions. She wants as many tutors as possible, and says a minimum to get the program going would be 10. Students have already Starting dropping by the Volunteer Bureau office where the tutoring program is based, The partnership with the Volunteer Bureau is an ideal one because she says there's no stigma for students to - come in there, rather than an ’ office solely devoted to lit- eracy training. Patterson wants to pair up students and tutors by mid- October. If you want to join the program, either as a student or a tutar, call Lynn Patter- son at 638-1330 or drop by the Volunteer Bureau at 4621 Lakelse Ave. City won’t break banking contract TERRACE city council won't stop doing business with the Toronto- Dominion and Royal banks. The suggestion that the city do so came last week when Thomhill regional district director Les Wat- mough appeared before city council and said such action is warranted. Watmough told councillors the two banks have used ‘‘deception, coercion and blackmail’’ in their role as reluc- tant owners of Skeena Cellulose Inc. “There’s no reason al ali they couldn't be logging. Those operations © were making money,’? Watmough said of the sawmills. Although the cily doesn’! presently deal with the Royal Bank, it is in the middle of a five-year contract with the Toronto-Dominion bank. Cily council voted to write a letier informing Watmough that it will honour the contract with the TD bank. Councilior David Hull believes much of the difficulties facing Skeena Cellulose are not the fault of the banks. said he LIFE FEELS HOPELESS? yesUS GIVES HOFE GRIEVE |g!
