Three French yessels—a
naval escort craft and two
destroyers—are being used
to keep tabs on Canadian
and other trawlers in a

al area of unsettled
jurisdiction between the
southceastof = ;
Newfoundland and St,
Pierre-Miquelon.

The escort Le F ‘ant,
with Lieut. Patrice
Kamengileser on the bridge,
began patrol work in early
May this year,.a few months
after Canada's 200-mile
limit went into effect, to
maintain France’s interests
in the waters between the
islands and the Burin
Peninsula of Newfoundland,
a dozen miles away.

On a recent courtesy visit
to St. John's, the French
commander said inspection
officers from his ship had
boarded a number of
Canadian trawlers working —
the thane but found ev-
ery in order.

The only fishing craft
allowed to fish in the area
are French, Canadian and
some Soviet vessels. Until
the two nations solve the
problem of the status of St.

ierre-Miquelon within the
200-mile economic control
zone, joint fisheries patrols,
seem indicated, the French
officer said. -

“Canada and France have.
joint jurisdiction over a
fishing. zone south of St.
Pierre and, with the
Canadian coast guard, we
control Canadian, French
and Russian fishing craft.’
