SUBJECT: Compost Bin Tender

That subject to receiving a provincial government grant, 1500 ‘Garden Gourmet’ compost bins be
purchased from GeoAlpine Environmental Consulting at a cost of $68,952.60.

tender was issued for the purch of 1500 composting bins for use in the City backyard compost bin
program. Seven qualifying bids were received. The unit prices for 1500 compost bins is outlined
below:

Note: before tax prices

Ecotainer, the low bidder, was rejected because there was concerns with the strength of the lid and side
vents. The side vents were not sufficiently strengthened to prevent puncturing which could introduce
rodents into the compester. There were also reports of the lid cracking after extended use.

The second to lowest bidder was Geo Alpine consulting at an after tax price of $45.96. For the
purchase of 1500 units $68,952.60 would be required from the Environmental Protection Budget.
