JR COQU 2580 SHAUGHNESSY STREET TELEPHONE: 944-5411 PORT COQUITLAM, B.C. FAX: 944.5402 V3C 2A8 GUR FILE March 5, 1992 RESIDENTS WOODLAND AREA Dear Resident: RE: Traffic Changes, Woodland Area, City of Port Coquitlam I am writing to bring you up to date on recent changes to the road patterns in the Woodland area and also to inform you of proposals for further traffic improvements in the future. Over the last several years, with shopping developments in Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam, and with residential developments in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, the traffic volume has been growing in the area especially along the Lougheed Highway and Westwood Street. With these changes, two types of problems have been developing ir the Woodland area, Firstly, residents from Woodland had difficulty accessing Westwoor Street through Kitchener or Woodland Drive due to the heavy traffic on Westwood, and due to the fact that there were no traffic lights on Westwood at that time (see attached Plan A of the existing streets in 1990). The second problem related to vehicles short-cutting through the Woodland area using Jervis/Raleigh/Burleigh or using Hastings/Patricia/Woodland Drive. After several public meetings with residents in the area, a two stage plan was adopted by the City in 1990 as shown on the attached Plan B for future traffic improvements, The first phase (which has now been substantially completed) involves the realignment of Kitchener to tie in with Woodland Drive at Westwood and Crabbe plus the installation of traffic lights at Westwood and Woodland/Crabbe. Also, the Ministry of Highways, at the request of the City, widened the Lougheed Highway at Westwood for a right tum lane for westbound traffic on Lougheed turning north on to Westwood. The second phase of the improvements involves the purchasing of land from the Poco Place Mall in order to widen Westwood Street so that an additional left turn lane can be constructed for southbound traffic on Westwood turing east on to Lougheed.
