May Day Co-Ordinator's Report 1983

The 1983 May Day Festivities were successful, but I was
disappointed in the attendance at some of the functions.
We had some. top calibre talent and some fun activities

‘ that were enjoyed by those who did attend.

There was more advertising this year as the Herald, the
Sunday, The Columbian and the Columbian Today carried
newspaper articles, CKNW Community Cruiser provided news
releases on their radio station, flyers went out toe all
the schools and we had a two day display at Coquitlam
Centre as well as posters around town. ‘

I would like to recommend that the May Day Committee

name be changed to the Port Coquitlam May Day Festival |
and Historical Seciety. The reason for this is because
May Day is part of Port Coquitlam's history and also

there are pedple in this communi ty who have shown interest

in May Day and an historical society.

I suggest that we put an advertisement in the paper in
late August and obtain either the Mabbett Room or Hyde
Creek Gymnasium, annquneing a meeting for the purpose of
starting this society. Much groundwork has to be done
over the summer months to have information available to
these intersated. It has been suggested that wa have a

$5 er $10 annual membership fee for administrative costs
during the year. We would also have fund-raising events
during the year such as Diamond Night and a Casino Night
for example. We would also like to sponsor the Miss Port
“Coquitlam Pageant. We would also support the Summer Games ,
Lf Port Coquitlam should be awarded them in the future,
and other functions to promote the City of Port Coquitlam.
We are losing many good volunteers to the surrounding
communities because we do not promote our own City. The
Society will make decisions, then go to department heads
or Council for approval.
