The youngest rider of the bunch was five-year- old Brandon Viguers. This was Viguer’s second year competing in the McBike competition and this year he pulled out a few new tricks. The little. lad jumped, _hopped and sped his way to third place finish in the under 16 division — not bad for a kid you doesn’t quite stand three [eet tall. Kitwanga’s Matthew Ranahan topped that divi- ‘sion with three finely ex- ecuted runs. Dean Campbeil and Drew Inkster tied for sec- ond, The pro division (over 16) say a hot battle be- tween Mat Fee and Chris Webb, both of whom pulled out some sick tricks and big air. But Webb managed to pull through for the win and Fee took second place. Gareth Hannes picked up a third place finish for his performance. During his final run he even incorporated some fancy breakdancing moves much to the crowd’s plea- SUre. ’ The BMX and skate- board. competitions were also the fourth event of five in this year’s Terrace Standard Adventure Chal- lenge 2002. Shane Spencer,25, the current men’s division points leader in the chal- lenge, also pulled out a few tricks for the competi- tion, Ii’s been quite a few years since the Terrace man got on a BMX but he managed to master a few tricks and put in an im- pressive ride, though he did not make the finals. Suki Spencer, 25, and Sarah Zimmerman, 26, were the only women to Eco-type challenge puts locals to the test By SARAH A. ZIMMERMAN A GROUP OF loca] men have been hitting the mountain trails and hiking to the top of local peaks preparing for an a hiking race unlike any other. Roger and Chris Chi- coine, Garry Stock, Frank Driol and Sandor Komlos are joining former Terrace resident Alexis Chicoine in the Access Challenge 2002. The Access Challenge is put on by the B.C. Mobility Opportunities Society (BCMOS), a group which works to enable disabled people to get out in the wilderness. Alexis Chicoine was paralyzed in a car crash in 2000 and she'll take part in the race in a specialized wheel- chair called a Trail Rider designed to navigate rocky, root-infested trails.. The Aug. 20-22 race covers 30 kilometres, sees teams consisting of one disabled person adn four able-bodied people gain over 3,000 feet of elevation and cross a ca- nyon over the Cheakamus River using a zip line. Cross- ing the canyon doesn’t phase Alexis one bit. “I’m a bil of a risk taker so I like that stuff,” she said. Alexis and her father Roger took part last year’s race but the rest of the team is new to the challenge. “They're really excited about doing this not just for me but for themselves as well,” she said. The team is gunning for first place but they have some stiff competition on their hands. Sam Suflivan, founder of BCMOS and the mastermind behind the Trail Rider, has brought in some “ringers” ~ seasoned Eco Challenge racers to join his team. This year the Discov- ery Channel will be tagging along to film the race. proud sponsor of | GRIME Wa STOPPERS Terrace Crime Stoppers are asking for help to solve some thefts from motor vehicles...
