News In Brief New super hired COAST MOUNTAINS School District has hired a new district superintendent. With the help of headhunters Price Waterhouse Coopers, the board has hired Herb A. Fader, of In- nisfail, Alberta. The headhunting firm cost the board $30,000 plus expenses. Fader will arrive in. Terrace in May and will offi- cially begin work August 15. Acting superintendent Sharon Beedle will re- sume her duties as assistant superintendent when Fader arrives. The district still must hire a new director of in- struction but is slowly filling a series of executive vacancies. Staff Sergeant named TERRACE’S NEW RCMP Staff Sergeant is on his way. The Staff Sergeant will work with Inspector Doug Wheler and Sergeant Darcy Gollan as one of three officers in command at the Terrace detach- - ment, Staff Sergeant ‘Tom Forester is due to arrive in J: Terrace from Burnaby in mid-July. i Corporat Rod Holland has been filling the posi- tion since Staff Sgt. Bob Solvason left Terrace for the lower mainland last January. Also leaving Terrace this summer is Sgt. Wayne Bloomquist, the head of the detachment’s identifi- cation unit. Replacing Bloomquist will be Cpl. Derek Steinhaeusser from Saskatchewan. Leaving Kemano APPROXIMATELY ONE-THIRD of the 69 fami- lies at Alcan’s soon-to-be-closed Kemano townsite have already made plans to live elsewhere, says the Alcan official in charge of ihe project. Doug Groves said 14 families have bought homes in Kitimat and another seven in Terrace in preparation for commuting later this year. Other workers are taking early retirement or buy-outs. They're -moving to a variety of places. Alcan announced last year it wanted to save money by closing down the townsite whose work- ers take care of the company’s hydro-electric gen- erators which supply Kitimat’s aluminum smelters. -. Instead, workers will live in a camp and rotate in and out by working one week and being off the next The townsite’s last official day is July 31. A number of bids have already been received to buy homes and buildings at Kemano and they are still being evaluated, said Groves, _ Trustee resigns ' HAZELTON TRUSTEE and vice-school board chair Charlie Willson has resigned effective June 30 due to health reasons. _ Willson, who has cancer, was first elected to the school board in 1996, “He's done great service ta people in the Hazel- tons,”. said board chair Linda Campbell. “He's a ‘steadfast member of our board and I will truly miss him” - Hazelton by-elections will be held June 10, with _ poling stations in various villages. Kitimat trustee Peter King will take over as vice- -chair of the board. Small surplus expected THE SCHOOL district is anticipating a minute budget surplus at the end of the school year, says acting superintendent Sharon Beedle. Beedle said the district now has about $200,000 saved, however a new collective agreement with CUPE support staff is expected to swallow up about $100,000 of that money. Industrial Inquiry Commissioners, hired to re- solve the dispute between CUPE support workers and 44 school boards across the province, have re- commended that workers receive a one per cent wage increase across the board retroactive to Jan- uary 1999, Beedle estimate the wage increase will cost the district $100,000. With that and other expected costs, the district will have very little money left over, she said. “We hope to have two quarters to rub together al the end of the day!” Beedle said, “a ty Pipher V “y -‘’ =" = | Tes 5 \emenen Rs N ae Tuxedo Rentals $69."° &up Bridal, Grad Dresses and Accessories 4609 lakelse Avenue, Terrace Ph: 635-4211 C4 oo A { Leal DOWNTOWN TERRACE The FHleart Ve AN Ev’s Mens Wear 4605 Lakelse Avenue 635-5420 “Celebrating 40 years serving you” NEW for Spring from Woolrich * Converter Pants - zip off legs perfect for Travel or Golf! ® Security Pants - 3 secure pockets, Teflon coated Great for Travel! ® Security Shirts is i TERRY’S «Cominercial, Residential, Aulomative Locksmithing *Authorized ASSA & MIWA Dealers LOCK Terry & Pat Heinricks eSofes - Sales & Service Journeyman Locksmiths 46244 Greig Avanue *Emergency Openings Terrace, BC V8G 1M?
