AB - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, April 5, 2000 Talstra outspends rivals to win may JACK TALSTRA outspent his challengers by a huge margin in last November’s municipal election. His campaign spent $15,625 to keep Talstra in the mayor’s chair, and there. were no big corpor- ale backers picking up the tab. The vast majority of it ~ $11,952.12.- came out of Talsira’s own pocket, Another nearly $600 came from his property de- velopment company, Five Star Properties. Remaining contribu- tions consisted of $500 from local orthodontist Dr. Vic Lepp, $100 from. for- mer Terrace mayor Dave Maroney and $75 from A. Marg. Crowns at work B.C’s CROWN prosecutors didn’t get a raise and a new contract when they called off last week’s four-day walkout, but at least they’re talking about it. For the first time Crown lawyers have an association, ‘recognized through changes to the Crown Counsel Act, that can bargain with the government. “This is all that we are asking for, we can not be unhappy with this,” said Mitch Houg, a northern crown counsel last week. The talks ended at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, March 26, the evening before almost 400 prosecutors were to have started a four-day province- wide walk out. About 94 per cent of the lawyers and 27 of 28 north- em prosecutors available, voted in favour of the new agreement. Terms of the settlement included the appointment of a lawyer and labour rela- lions specialist to mediate concerns within the next 60 days... Donald Monroe worked as a mediator during the ne- gotiations leading up to the agreement. Signs and brochures made up nearly $3,000 of that, with newspaper and broadcast advertising fol- lowing at about $2,200. Postage for brochures was another $385. Hawes paid most of the expenses herself, with $797.83 in declared contri- butions, of which the lar- gest was $300 from Houl- den Logging. The third mayoral can- didate Garry Pryce paid for almost all of his $1,700 campaign, the bulk of or’s seat Linda Hawes which went to signs and brochures. The top spender among city councillors was Rich McDaniel, at $1,478, and Val George was a close second at $1,437.65, Those two finished third and sec- ond respectively. Frank Hamilton spent $947.34 but finished out of the running in 9th spot. Ron Vanderlee spent $724.50 and squeezed into the last council seat. Other candidates proved you could still win a coun- cil seat with a low budget campaign. As with the mayoral candidates, most council contenders paid almost all expenses out of their own pocket, David Hull got the big- gest corporate contribution — $300 from local develo- per Progressive Ventures. Lynne Christiansen got $200 from the Farmer's Market. Labour wasn't a big factor, but Ron Vanderlee got $250 from the Cana- dian Union of Public Em- ployees and Fraser got $100 from the United Food and Commercial Workers. A few other individuals donated amounts of $100 or Jess ta some council candidates’ campaigns.
