Sporting founder remembered NO PIONEER probably had as big an impact on the sporting history of Terrace than Joe Schultzik. Joe sadly passed away on Oct, 10 last year in Chil- liwack. Although he is gone now, his contribution to the town is sli] evident today — such as in the golf course and the curling rink. Joe grew up in the Topley and Hazelton area, finishing high school in Chilliwack and = taking = his © post secondary educalion al the Vancouver Ss Technical School. In the summer of 1934 Joe went to work for the CNR in Topley. He joined: the airforce in 1941 and in 1945 moved to Terrace to work in the saw- mill. YVONNE MOEN In the late 1940s Joe and Mel Peek Voute decided Terrace needed a golf course. They leased 15 acres of land from George Little south of the railway tracks, from Kalum St. to the Sandie overpass. Things were going pretty good until 1948 when the flood came. The flood stranded a herd of cattle, and there was no place else for them but the golf course, so that ended the greens pretty quickly. In 1950 Joe ‘started L&S Sporting Goods. A tourist from Switzerland had come to Terrace for a fishing trip and was so impressed with Joe’s service that he wrote to the Vancouver sun, com- mending him as an “ambassador of friendli- ness."” Joe sold the business in 1962 to Bob Sheridan. _ He never lost that idea for a golf course in Bob Grobler said he heard Joe was inter- ested in getting golf started in Terrace. Joc suggested the Cole farm on Old Lakelse Lake Road. And of course this became the site of today’s golf course. Joe was also instrumental in starting competitive curl- ing in Terrace. Curling fever bit hard in 1953 and enthusiasts had ‘to travel to Lost Lake, playing with big cans with ice in them. . Joe was on the first curl- ing group ever formed with Jim McConnel and Chris Haughland. They travelled to Prince Rupert and entered in the Marine Bonspicl and won the B event. The team was known as the “‘Iceless wonders.’” When the team arrived back in Terrace, the town rallied and decided to build a rink. It had three sheets of ice and was completed in March 1956 on Davis Ave. The first set of rocks used in the rink are now on display at Heritage Park. Joe also had one of the first pistol ranges in town which he operated in the “OPENING SOON!!! ° ® Drop off service 8-6 ® Delivery © Showers ¢ Snack Bar L&D LAUNDROMAT. » Located On Kalum Minutes From Downtown » * Outside smoking room ® Eating Area © Open 7-1] * Clean & Affordable Joe Schultzik basement of his store, lo- cated where Co-op is today. But Joe was interested in more than sports. He was in- strumental in starting Ter- race’s first community band in 1953 and was a member of Terrace’s first symphony in 1951. Joe retired in 1975 and moved to Chilliwack. A celebration of Joe’s life was held last October al his’ home in Chilliwack with friends and family gathered together. Joe’s sister Claire Turner still lives in Terrace with her family, as does his niece Barbie Muir, close friend Barbara Anderson and many other friends.
