THE WESTERN CANADIAN LUMBER WORKER JANUARY—FEBRUARY, 1974 [MILL EVALUATION PAYS OFF TIF The I.W.A. Negotiating Committee consisting of Regional 1st Vice President Wyman Trineer and Local 1-405 President Wayne Nowlin, assisted by the Regional Evaluation Department, in last month’s negotiations with Canadian Cellulose Company Ltd., has improved upon the sawmill job evaluation which was originally put into effect on July 1, 1972. The Plan now provides for twenty-one (21) labour grades and the monetary values between these labour grades are calculated on “FIXED” percentages of the base rate as per the following examples: (a) the monetary difference between the base rate and labour grade number two equals 1 percent of the base rate of $4.45 effective July 1, 1973 or $0.04 (b) the monetary difference between the base rate and labour grade number eleven equals approximately 16 percent of the base rate effective July 1, 1973 or $0.72 : (c) the monetary difference between the base rate and labour grade number twenty-one equals approximately 46% percent of the base rate effective July 1, 1973 or $2.07. ; When the base rate rises as a result of broad contract negotiations, the monetary difference between labour grades will rise ‘‘automatically’”’ in line with the negotiated percentage grade increments. Following are the negotiated point ranges between labour grades, the negoti- ated percentage increments between these labour grades and the resulting rates for each of the twenty-one labour grades: Increment asa _— Resulting Resulting Percentage of Increment Rate j Points Grade Base Rate July 1, 1973 July 1, 1973 0- 60 1 _ -00 $ 4.45 61- 80 2 1.00 04 4.49 81- 100 3 1.14 .05 4.54 101- 135 4 1.28 .06 4.60 136- 175 5 1.42 .06 4.66 176- 220 6 1.56 07 4.73 221- 270 7 1.70 .08 4.81 271- 320 8 1.84 .08 4.89 321- 370 9 1.98 .09 4.98 371- 430 10 2,12 .09 5.07 431- 490 11 2.26 10 5.17 491- 550 12 2.40 - Al 5.28 551- 620 13 2.54 ll 5.39 621- 690 14 2.68 12 5.51 691- 760 15 2.82 13 5.64 761- 830 16 2.96 13 5.77 831- 900 17 3.10 14 5.91 901- 970 18 3.24 14 6.05 971-1040 19 3.38 .15 6.20 1041-1110 20 3.52 16 6.36 1111-1180 21 3.66 — 16 6.52 46.6% $2.07 Wage Curve Difference Implementation of the above outline plan has resulted in the following rate revisions retroactive from July 1, 1973: Total in sawmill and planermill: 72 categories No revision: 31 categories Upward revisions: 41 categories (7/ 6c, 5/7c, 4/8c, 5/9ce, 1/10¢e, 1/ lle, 1/ 12¢, 2/18¢c, 1/17¢c, 5/18c, 1/19c, 1/22c, 4/26c, - 1/ 28c, and 2/ 46c) In order to make it possible to completely understand the full impact of this evaluation plan we will list: (a) the labour grade and related rate (b) the category title (ce) the total rate revision per category during the life-time of the current agreement.
