Festival’s headline entertainers
believe in having a good time

Like the group vocals, their instrumental blend was

clean but deliberately rough-edged, eschewing lyrical —

niceties to concentrate on teamwork in which instru-
mental voices doubled and tripled one another and
even the very occasional slower songs maintained a
firmly danceable momentum -— Stephen Holden, The
New York Times.

The object of the critic’s ravings is La Bottine Souri-
ante, headline entertainment for this year’s Festival
du Bois.

Described as a neo-traditional folk group, the 20-
year-old band specializes in fiddle-heavy party mu-
sic that draws on a host of influences.

The traditional Quebecois folk music — heavily in-
fluenced by Irish immigration in the 1880s — is aug-
mented by brass section that adds new color to the
music.

La Bottine Souriante has won two Juno awards for
best roots recordings but it is not just a traditional
band. La Bottine Souriante has played with jazz
groups and as part of Peter Gabriel’s world music
project.

The bottom line is still dance music, though.

“When you listen to La Bottine, you have fun, you
laugh, you smile,” says founder Yves Lambert. “Peo-
ple like singing, dancing and having fun, and that’s
our trademark.”
