THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PORT COQUITLAM C 0 UJ N C | | MEMORANDUM _—_eEe APR 26 1982 TO: B. Kirk, April 22, 1982 City Administrator FROM: F.E. Peters, City Engineer SUBJECT: Options for Broadway Street Reconstruction Public Works Committee, April 20, 1982 RECOMMENDATION: The Public Works Committee recommends that the project which is currently included in the Budget for the reconstruction of Broadway from Kingsway to Cameron, be altered to include a narrower construction of Broadway all the way from Kingsway to the Bypass and eliminate the construction of the box culvert at this time. . BACKGROUND AND COMMENTS: The project currently included in the Budget is for full width construction of Broadway Street with curb and gutter both sides and with the closure of the ditch by means of a large and very expensive box culvert. The completion of the street to this standard is very desirable but not entirely necessary at this time. However, construction to full width is required in order to obtain the revenue sharing from the Department of Highways which was approved last year inthe amount of $191,000 and carried over to this year. An alternative construction which makes a lot of sense from the City's point of view would be to leave the ditch open for now and to use the money to complete the road work on Broadway from Kingsway to the Mary Hill Bypass. By reconstructing Broadway to the same standard as we used on Kingsway last year, we can do the whole length of Broadway for less than it would cost the City to do the work which is currently included in the Budget, A comparison of costs is as follows: Currently Budgeted Project Total Cost including culvert $962,000 Less Dept. Of Highways sharing $191,000 Cost to the City ineluding Development Cost Charges $771,000 36
