Dear Sir: The New Westminster and Coquitlam District Society for the Retarded has been serving the needs of mentally handicapped people in New. Westminster, Coquitlam, Pt. Moody, loco and Pt. Coquitlam for over 25 years. Enclosed. please find copies of. our brochure which briefly descrbics our resources. We are a non-profit Society dedicated to serving mentally handicapped people. Recently we formed a Recreation Committee whose task is to meet the needs of mentally handicapped people in leisure and recreational persuits. This commi ttee has drafted, approved a philosophy statement concerning people with special needs. We ask that you present this philosophy statement at your next council meeting for adoption by council as a statement of your basic philosophy. Tf or some member of my committee vould be willing to discuss this with you prior to the council meeting. As this is International Year of the Disabled, it would seem appropriate to miake sure a statement at this time. In addition, our Society will be pressing for more involvement of handi-~ capped people in community recreation and leisure programs. . We ask you to inform us of Recreational staff who have responsibility for such involvement so we may establish a close working. relation with the department.
