We look at the gianl Ireas, the lush green underbrush and marvel at the intricate balance between each plant and species, In the ol¢ growth forest which grows around Lakelse Lake, soma of the treas date back three hundred years. Giant Sitka Spruce, Westen Red Cedar and Hemlock capture the heart and Imagination as you walk along the park trails. Smaller plants like Lady Fern and Devils Club, compete for suntight in the heavily shaded forest ftoor, In the damper places like swampy slream beds, skunk cabbage grwos in abua- dance, adding 2 unique aroma to the musty green smell, ona can only find in a place so rich with lita and cotour. Since the beginning of the season, | have walked tha Twin Spruce Trails clase to 40 times. Instead of growing tired of Seeing the same plants and treas, my interast in botany and ecology has baen reawakened. | now marvel at how many dilterent shades of green there really ate when j lake the time to really look at each plant species. The trail seems to change every time | walk it; each hemlock seeding w ounchbery lower is different from the naxt. Unfortunately, | am beginning (a see the toll of regular bicycle and feot traflic is having on the trails and surrounding area. Along the Twin Spruce trail for exampla, a rotting log which was home for many bugs, hemlock seedlings and small rodents fas been ripped apart. Sometimes thoughtless people discard their garbage along the path to Gruchy's Beach. Ht you are using these trails, (and we certalnly hope you are) please be mindful of where you walk and that what you bring to the deach is put in the approoriate place when you are finished.
