Zone 10 Games team brings back 26 medals The Zone 10 B.C, Senior Games team made up of players from Terrace, Kitimat and Prince Rupert are proud of the fact they won 18 medals last year. This year’s adventure into the annual event for seniors aged 55 and older at Coquitlam was even more lucrative — our gang came home with 26 medals from the - games held early in September. We had some superlative perform- ances, including Joe Mandur’s five gold and one silver effort in the swimming pool. Terrace veteran Bud Kirkaldy came up with four medals in track and field. He won gold for the shotput, javelin and discus, plus a silver in the long jump. In badminton, Kitimat’s Dorothy Cheyne brought home two silver medals while her teammate Ann Kawa had one silver. Jim Allan had good wind in the bagpipe event. Jim won a couple of silver medals. Prince Rupert’s Ted Arney hit golf balls accurately enough to collect a gold in his event. Bob Bennett came through with a goid- medal effort in darts. In horseshoe tossing, Betty Dem- "mitt won silver while Joan Ziraldo took a bronze. Rupert’s Vi Walker won two swimming medals — one silver and one bronze. Doreen Lindeman was a silver medallist in five-pin bowling. Our walkers were successful as well, including a gold for Joe Smith in the 10-kilometre event and a pair of bronzes for Jim MacDougall for his efforts in both five and 10-K walking. _A surprise winner was Terrace’s Bill Bennett, He won gold in the five-K walking race. OLD, BUT SPEEDY — Being a gold medal winner ina sporting event is memorable for a youngster, but if you happen to be 83 years old it’s amazing. Well-known Terrace resident Bill Bennett earned his gold medal at the B.C. Seniors’ Games at Co- quitlam earlier this month. Bill was one of several over-55 competitors, and by far the eldest from here. His award came in the five-kil- ometre waik, an event for which he’s well qualified. Bennett has the regular habit of walking about three miles every day for exercise. This means he’s in very good shape for a man his age. Bill spent 30 years of his carly life at sea. He joined the Merchant Marines when aged 17. He also spent eight years in the Canadian Amny in World War I. Born in Scotland in 1907, he’s been married for 52 years to wife Norma. They have one son and four grandchildren. Billi owned and operated The Motel for 32 years. He sold out three years ago and now lives in retirement. High school sports scene taking shape The high school sports situation will be keener this season with the approval of Burns Lake teams to quit the North Central zone and compete in our Northwest zone in future as either double ’AA’ or single °A’ (depending on the school’s population). This was one of the items that came up at the NW athletics meet- ing held at Thornhill Junior high school on Friday. Soccer will be kicking off the inter-school season, quickly fol- lowed by volleyball and then bas- ketball. Badminton, track and field and finally golf will wind up the school year next spring. A complete schedule for all sports is expected to be out by the end of this month. Meanwhile, Terrace will get its mini-basketball season underway with a registration this Friday at 6 p.m. at Caledonia Senior Second- ary gym. It’s for boys and girls in the Grades 5 to 7 age group.
