Bld Terrace Review — IVAN NAVARRO: When | finally left Panama in 1988, the Wednesday, May 9, 1990 Honor students named at — Caledonia and Skeena | The administration at Cale- donia Senior Secondary and # Skeena Junior Secondary, last problems had just started getting worse. Who is... Ivan Navarro? by Betty Barton Ivan’ Navarro is a roadway design ‘engineer for the geo- technical branch of the Ministry ‘of Highways in Terrace, and he’s a world traveller. Navarro arrived here on Jan. 15 from Calgary to commence a number of highways projects in ‘this area. He is presently work- ing on-several paving designs for section four (from Meziadin to ' Bell Irving) of the Stewart- Cassiar highway. Navarro says that project managers or con- tractors take care of quality con- trol_and design implementation, so he doesn’t know how in- volved he’ ll be in the actual con- struction process. This is Navarro’s first govern- ment job in Canada. Since his emigration from Chile in 1974, he has worked for private com- panies from Calgary to Venezuala to Panama to Nepal. He and his wife Alba, two of their five daughters and their son Rodrigo (the youngest) left Chile in 1974 during the coup against Allende (pronounced Ayenday). When they first ar- rived in Toronto, Navarro took English courses. He already read and wrote English, but hadn’t much chance to practise it. He still occasionally finds that peo- ple don’t understand him, but he just smiles and tries again. Ivan Navarro obtained his ‘degree in highways engineering in 1962 at the University of Chile in Santiago. In 1975, he and his family moved to Calgary where he worked in soil investigation and research for a geo-technical company, Klonh Leonoff. In 1976 they moved to Venezuala where Ivan worked for the government doing highways quality control on a $300 million freeway to La Fria, “When Venezuala still had a lot. of money from the oil fields,” quips Navarro. Chilean en- _ gineering friends who had fled to Venezuala had called. him in Calgary when they needed. his engineering expertise, —— Back in Calgary, Navarro. went to work for Geocon doing | geotech’ engineering ‘working more on highways with earth treatment. He went to Ghana with them, and then worked | with the same company again in Panama. “When I finally left Panama in 1988, the problems had just started getting worse,”’ a freeway through the heart of Panama City. His wife and his son Rodrigo had vacationed - there with him, but they lived in Calgary during his. sojourn in Panama. In Nepal, Navarro’s ‘next: foreign posting, he found the working methods totally dif- ferent. A lot of work, including moving earth and making ‘crush’ for highway topping, was done by hand. Ivan Navarro enjoyed his en-— gineering experiences around the -world, but he says, ‘Now I just want to stay in one place. Too much travelling and my wife started to feel alone.’’ He is im- pressed with the landscape of Terrace, He looks forward to his wife’s arrival from Calgary in May. Then they will find a per- manent home, go camping, take time for fishing — which Ivan really likes — and make north- western B.C, ‘home’, _ Dennis Venema, Says . Navarro. Navarro had been working on pavement design for: week.released the names of stu- dents who achieved honor roll status for the reporting period ending in mid-April.
