The mood was optimistic. The

talk was tough. And when it was
over 402 delegates to the Skeena

‘provincial NDP. nominating. con-
. vention had chosen Helmut Gies-
brecht. to take on -- it. appears, at

Parker in.the next election.

- It was close, though. Giesbrecht
beat-out Mike Corbeil by just 18
votes, and in his parting message
Giesbrecht made a call for party
unity.. “It’s. a time to come
together," he said. "We've got a

job to do. To give Dave Parker his.

. The convention took place at the
R.E.M.. Lee Theatre. last Saturday
afternoon with. a number of

needed someone in Skeena riding
to. provide an alternative to ‘the
incompetence and indifference of
the Socreds on environmental and
aboriginal issues.

the high cost of health care for
those who live in the north, and
how current economic policies are
divisive.. "The rich are definitely
getting richer; and the poor are
certainly getting poorer," he said.
And he talked about the most
pressing issue, land claims. "First,

we must settle the land question,”

said Corbeil, “and give our Native —

people the economic independence
they so desperately need and
want."

But the words of the day that »

counted in the end came from
Giesbrecht, GO B.C. funds should
be spent on women’s centres,

dysfunctional kids and people who

can’t really afford to buy those
lottery tickets... but it’s their last
hope. Land claims "must" be
settled — "Continued conflict pro-
motes racism." Environmental
concerns must be addressed. There

should be heavy fines against -

polluters and recycling should be

promoted better. Health care and ~

education in B.C. need better fund--
ing. Forestry is a mess. ,

These were Giesbrecht’s claims
and after he was elected came his

challenge to MLA Dave Parker.

"The next time we meet the gloves

are off," said Giesbrecht, "And

Dave’s going down for the count."
The next provincial campaign
should be far from dull.
