Helge Sundberg. Terrace company says Ottawa Street will-have to be closed. ~ Street closure critica Okanagan-Skeena Holdings real estate manager, used a model to describe the concept to a Com- mittee of the Whole meeting on Oct. 3, and returned to Terrace for the Oct. 11 council meeting to hear: their decision, the con- cept was referred back to com- mittee after alderman Bob Jackman said there were. ‘a few interested parties who have ex- pressed concern’’. In a telephone interview Mon- day, Guy expressed some disap- pointment that a decision hadn't been made at the Oct. 11 meeting, but he added that the city had done the night thing. A project of this size has to be looked at from all angles, he ex- plained. The real concern for Okanagan-Skeena is one. of:tim- ing — they want the project to go to tender next February: and there’s a lot of work to be.done - between now and then. Guy said he has discussed the project ‘with both Canada Safeway and city administrator Bob Hallsor and is hopeful that a decision will be made at the Oct. 24 meeting of council. Part of the problem for coun- cil seems to be the closure of Ot- tawa St, But Guy explains that by closing Ottawa and restric- ting access to Lakelse Ave,, the downtown area will be made safer for both motor vehicles and pedestrians. And, he says, this is one point which made the Frank Donahue clients, *Skeeno Mall, Terrace | to mall . Committee of the Whole happy. Traffic hazards presently exist in two main areas between the Terrace Shopping Centre and the Skeena Mall. The Okanagan-Skeena project would close all but two exits — at the PetroCan service station — and Guy says the plan would make the downtown area safer while still allowing traffic flow between Greig and Lakelse. He explains that this would. be a result of their joining the Ter- race Shopping Centre and Skeena Mall parking lots, keep- ing traffic off Lakelse and giving shoppers safer and easier access to one major shopping area stretching from Emerson to Eby. . . But the bottom line, says Guy, is the closure of Ottawa: St. As part of the redevelopment plan, it will give Okanagan-Skeena the additional space they need to ‘make the project economically viable. Without the closure, he says, his company would simply be relocating their present not adding to the available retail space in the city, and nobody would really gain. He also adds that in addition _to adding new shopping oppor- tunities, it will mean increased revenue for the city through taxes and business licenses, and additional retail space which would attract new businesses and jobs.
