Terrace Oldtimers J hold 7th reunion Onnalee Kirkaldy: celebrated her 82nd birthday at the Old- timers’ Reunion. Over 140 Terrace Oldtimers enjoyed a feast and fellowship at their annual reunion held at the Terrace Hotel Saturday evening, July 30. by Pam Whitaker Although it isn’t a Riverboat Days: function, it appropriately felt on the weekend when Ter- race celebrates her colorful history. Citizens who had lived 30 years or more in Terrace gathered from different corners of Canada. Indeed, Otto Van- barnevelde, who now lives in Nova Scotia, won the prize for coming the farthest. Under the auspices of master of ceremonies Alec Hagen, other prizes were awarded to Mrs. Whitlow for being the eldest at age 97, and door prizes to Bill Christy Jr. and Marie Harrison. According to Julia Little of Terrace, Bileen Frank did nost of the planning this year. There was dinner, then visiting. A col- lection of historical photographs and written articles were available to browse through. The idea for the annual event originated when one day Mrs.’ Little and some friends were sit- ting reminiscing about ‘‘old times’’, They thought how nice it would be to- have a reunion. Before it had become a reality, however, by the next spring, one of those friends had passed away, . ; The first reunion was held in the basement of the Terrace library in July, 1981. It was at- tended by 20 people. Salaries increased for TERRACE — City council has approved a five percent wage in- crease, retroactive to Jan. 1 this year, for all city management staff. This wage agreement also includes fuil payment of Employee Assistance Plan premiums of $48 per year for all management personnel. Three management positions: the fire chief, superintendant of parks. and recreation and the ad- ministrator’s confidential sec- retary, will receive an additional increment due to added workloads or other factors, According to city ad- ministrator Bob Hallsor, a five percent increase in the fire- chief’s wage brought it up to a level only slightly higher than his Terrace Review — Wednesday, Augusi 3, 1988 23 in Its seventh year, the annual Terrace Oldtimers’ Reunion has grown from an attendance of 40 at the original reunion to more than 140 for the 1988 edition. The long-time Terrace residents got together last Saturday evening at the Terrace Hotel. lieutenant. Because of this, the chief was given an additional $496 per month adjustment to give a ‘*more recognizable spread”. This adjustment places the fire chief's salary at $47,000 per year — a6.1 percent increase over last year. ‘Hallsor also stated that the superintendant of parks and rec- reation position is ‘‘an extremely responsible one’’ and ‘‘the re- sponsibilities closely parallel those of the director of opera- tions’’. He said the position ad- ministers’ a $1 million budget and the equivalent of 21 full- time employees. A five percent increase placed: ‘this:-wage at. $43,260 per year, but effective July 1 it will become $45,000 — the same as the director of operations salary in 1987. The confidential secretary’s position, Hallsor said, ‘has an extremely demanding workload and responsibilities that far ex- ceed those of the departmental services clerk I position.” The confidential secretary’s wage therefore has been increased to $27,500 — a 9.1 percent in- crease, _. The city’s management staff consists of 12 employees with salaries now ranging from $27,500 for the confidential sécretary to $59;480 for the ad- ministrator. Total management salaries in 1988 will amount to: ‘LASSIFIED_ city management $518,693, or $15,377 more than those of 1987. Council also ratified a two- year agreement with unionized city employees last June which includes a 50/50 cost sharing clause on the Employment Assistance Program. Hallsor said. the agreement gave city employees a five percent pay hike this year plus an additional five percent in 1989. Under this agreement, ap- proximately 100 city employees received a 50 cent per hour pay hike retroactive to Jan. 1, an ad- ditional 25 cents per hour on Ju- ‘ly 1,and on Jan. 1, 1989, will receive an additional five per- cent across-the-board increase. - EQUIPMENT & BLANKET CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING These Ads appear in the more than 75 Newspapers of the B.C. and Yukon Community Newspapers Association and reach more than 1,000,000 homes and a potential two milllon readers. $159. for 25 words ($3. per each additional word) Call The Terrace Review at 635-7840 AUTOMOTIVE Buy/lease any gas, diesel car or truck, new or used.
