The best g Terrace Review Mens August 5, 1 987: Parr sets record for mountain TERRACE — It took six years before Colin Parr managed to put his name on the Skeena Val- ly Runners’ King-of-the- Mountain victory trophy for the second time, and he did it in a record breaking performance at - the July 26 race. - Parr cracked the mark set last year by Richard Harrison of Telkwa. In 1986, Harrison won the event for the fourth con- secutive time, breaking his own record in a time of 35 minutes, ' 41 seconds, Under sunny skies, Parr knocked eight seconds off the - Harrison record in posting a time of 35 minutes, 33 seconds. _ Organizers had not expected a new mark. It rained quite hard the night before and parts of the route along the Terrace moun- tain trail were quite slippery. But. it didn’t bother Parr, who ran the five-mile-race with Harrison close on his heels. Har- rison’s time of 37.09 was good . enough for second place overall. Third across the line with a. time of 40.13 was former Ter- ' race athlete Ric Hanna of Saska- ‘toon. Ric took top place for — master men at age 40 and older. The owner of the Inn of the West accomplished the feat dur- ing men’s night at the Skeena ’ Valley club on July 29 when he. canned his shot on the 145-yard, par-three, second hole in a match with Ernie McConnell and Sandy Sandover-Sly, Rod used a seven-iron for his ' ace, which helped him to a round of 39. The second hole plays anywhere from 145 to 160 yards, depending on the tee markers. It-was the fourth hole-in-one on the second this year. Bob ’ Park started things off with an ace in the spring. Then during the week of the Men’s Open , Tournament, Ray Taft and Rod Vance of Kitimat each came up. with gems. In the 14 to 16 age group, Jason Larson won for boys in a time of 44.46. On the girls’ side it was Katherine Robson at one hour, {7 minutes, 12 seconds. - Good times were turned in by the two youngsters winning in the 10 to 13 group. Kenny Lavoie had a had a time of 58.20, while Karen Shepherd was only 28 seconds behind him. Forty-nine of the 52 starters finished the gruelling event. There were no serious injuries. Sue Walker-Simpson, a five- time winner of the open women’s division, did not enter this year’s race due to an injury. Terrace - swimmers snag medals It took a few weeks, but’ results of a major swim meet held in late June have finally been released, and the news for Terrace Blueback swimmers is quite good. The June 26 to 28 B. ron Junior | Provincial Championships at U.B.C. saw the Bluebacks amass 14 medals against strong opposi- § - tion. Four gold-medal winning performances were turned in by Cory Holland in the 10 and § under group. - Cory won his 100 breastroke, 200 medley, 50 backstroke, and 100 butterfly. He also picked up a silver in the 200 freestyle. The other gold medals went to Aimee Peacock for girls 10-and- "under 100 breast, and Nicole’ | Slater in the. 10-and-under_ 50 freestyle, © As for the other silver medal winners, Joelle Walker had two — the 200 medley and 100 fly for 10-and-under. She also had a bronze in the 50 fly. Ben Bell had a silver in the 400 medley for 11 and 12, while Jen- nifer Mackie took silver in the 50 free for 13 and 14, Andy McKay | won two bronze medals for 10-and-under in. the 50 and 100 back. . The Bluebacks went to the event with 12 swimmers and all made finals ‘except Dawn [ Thomsen, who finished a solid 14th in her three events and im- proved all her times. The Bluebacks placed eighth out of 22 swim clubs with 182 points. Six of the top 10 clubs had more than 16 swimmers competing. The Kitimat Marlins also took part and ran up 154 points for 10th place, Out of 30 competitors in the 10-and-under group, Joelle Walker was the aggregate win- ner with 29 points.
