TERRACE — A recent letter to the Board of School Trustees made several points about the use of computers in the schools. by Philip Musselman The letter, from D.G. Sheridan, explained the uneasiness about the com- oe puter as an educational ce tool. The various com- “ puter companies have begun advertising the im- portance of a computer as an aid for learning for children. Parents are be- ing urged to buy com- puters for their sons and daughters so that they may keep up with new technology. The position that Sheridan took sug- gested that there wasn’t enough good educational software on the market to stress the ‘need for com- puters. According to Assistant Superintendant Skip Bergsma, the letter brings up a few valid points, but the use of computers in the schools is very expan- sive ‘at this point. No longer are they just used for word processing, they are used for learning, Organization, career train- ing, and many other things. According to Bergsma, people are con- tinually adapting to com- puters and using them to save time and build skills. Many new uses are being found, like computer assisted drafting, for in- stance. It’s a matter of how much the parents Should computer education be studied further? think they and their children can use a com- puter that is important, Bergsma concluded, not how much others think they need them. |.
