Brown Director of Community Planni Sign Bviaw RECOMMENDATION: That City Counci adopt the following recommendations That the Sign Bylaw not be amended to authorize the use of portable signs. That City Counci! reaffirm the practice of allowing new businesses to display a portable sign up to 30 davs. That City Counci| direct staff to start a ciean up campaign for Expo, The initiative would include sending letters To businesses asking them to clean up around their premises, followed by enforcement of City bviaws. , That the Minister of Highways be requested to direct his ‘staff To remove portable signs that fal! under jurisdiction of the Controlled Access Highway Act. Comments: The remaining portable signs are clustered along Lougheed Highway near Shaughnessy Street, It appears the initiative -to reconsider the City's pronibition of the use of portable signs is the remaining signs are difficult to remove. This report is recommending that portable signs continue to be prohibited. The basis for that recommendation is that portabie signs give the City a cluttered and messy appearance. Also, permitting use of portable signs sould be counter to the City's recent efforts to improve the image of the community. As mentioned above, the scale of the problem of businesses using portabie signs is small. An interasting side note to this is that most of the businesses using portaole signs ara on properties where there is a history of problems. tn discussing the Sign Bylaw during its introduction, City Council addressed the probiam of accommodating new businesses that do not have signage and need additional exposure to start up.
