AIO - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, September 10, 2003 Business Review Out & About Coffee giant eyes city STARBUCKS is eyeing Terrace as a location for a new specialty coffee out- let. The Seattle-based cof- fee giant is actively searching for a suitable property in Terrace, says Brian Baker of the Terrace Economic Development Authority. “They wanted to know ‘if it was possible to get anything in that funky new tourism district you have,’” Baker recounted. He had to explain the tourism zone exists only on paper so far — the city and others are working on move the former George Little house to the foot of Kalum to serve as the VIA train station and retail lo- cation. Baker is optimistic the house will be moved in October, allowing the win- ter months for interior and finishing work. The city’s strategy is that the new railway sta- tion will anchor the down- town tourism area, and be the entry point for cruise ship passengers arriving by rail from Prince Rupert. Baker says he’s also heard rumours but seen no hard evidence of Home Depot looking at Terrace. More big box and res- taurant activity. wouldn’t surprise him. “Usually when Wal- Mart comes they bring a couple of others,” he said. Jobless rate up UNEMPLOYMENT in the northwest rose to [2.1 per cent in August. - That was up half a point from 11.6 per cent in July in the north coast/Nechako region, according to Sta- tistics Canada, Labour market analyst Patrick McIntyre said the increase was due to 300 more people entered the workforce ta look for work, while the actual number of jobs remained steady. The jobless rate should stabilize as teachers and students return to work, he added. The northwest region now has the highest job- less rate in B.C. The next highest regions are the Kootenays at 11.2 per cent and the Cariboo at 10,8 per cent. B.C. unemployment is 8.5 per cent. Surjeet Gill picks up his latest cheque. Iidled Skeena workers pick up their cheques NEW SKEENA sawmill workers should get an additional $1,250 payment next week on top of $5,000 they've received from the company so far. The extra amount is a penalty the company agreed to pay if it didn’t restart the Terrace sawmill by Sept. 15. IWA spokesman Surinder Malhotra said there’s no reason to believe the com- pany won't honour the deal. “He has kept his promise up to now,” Malhotra said of company president Dan Veniez. “He has made cach and every payment.” New Skeena has paid mill workers here four instalments of $1,250 since they agreed this spring to a 20 per cent pay rollback and other cost reductions for the next five years. The latest of those monthly instal- ments cheques were issued last week. The payments are considered advances on future profit sharing. Workers who want to receive the mon- ey had to sign an agreement stating they would pay back the money if they did not work for a specified period of time once the mill re-opens.
