Alé - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, April 28, 1999 Mayors ask politicians to end rhetoric on Skeena Cellulose NORTHWEST mayors are formally calling on all MLAs io end their at- tacks on the province’s bailowt of Skeena Cellulose. A letter sent to all members asks that “politicians of all stripes cease the political rhetoric directed toward SCI, and allow it to move forward.’’ "Fo us it appears that SCI’s invest- ment decisions are being held back by the spectre of negative political back- lash,’ the letter states. Tt says B.C. needs to accept that government ownership of ihe compa- ny — regardless of whether interven- tion was appropriate — is now a reality, “Unfortunately, SCI's ongoing presence in the political arena is pre- venting the company from rational in- vestment decisions. In effect, the neg- ative political critics are creating a self fulilling prophecy." The letter was signed by all eight northwest mayors from Telkwa to Prince Rupert. The letters are part of a major campaign to achieve the release of capital expenditure money for the company. Treasury board-is expected to. con sider the request in May. Northwest Loggers Association president Ken Howilden said his group also wants to see the capital work pro- ceed, “We contractors pave at the office and we want the deal to be fulfilled,” he said. ‘Whether the opposition or the public likes it a deal was made and they should stick with it.” Houlden said peopte in the rest of the province don’t understand the dif- ference between the Skcena Cellulose crisis and Bowater's decision to shut _ down its Gold River pulp miil. In Gold River, he said, the company paid off all its debts before closure, “Tf the Gordon Campbell solution had been taken up here it wouldn’t have been just Skeena Cellulose that fell, it would have been the majority of contractors in the northwest,’’ Houlden said. “It wouldn’t have been a tidy close- up of operations. It would have been devastation.”? Company still runs without a board GOVERNMENT officials have tersely rejected the city's request that Skeena Cellulose get a board of directors. The company continues to operate without a board of directors, despite that being one of the terms of the 15- month old restructuring plan. Mayor Jack Talstra said northwest communities are hoping a northwest rep might be named to such a board, *‘A local board of direc- Market tors can assisl this company a great deal, I think, in pub- lic relations,’’ Talstra said. He said northwest resi- dents on the board would be in a better position to refute misconceptions about the company elsewhere in the province and help correct its image problem. But Talstra said the idea was flatly rejected by north- em development minister Dan Miller. “He indicated that was a no goa,” Talstra said. “Discussion was rather brief and we went on to other things.”? “T think it’s unfortunate,’ he added, noting it’s un- usual for such a large and complex company to be ef- Bill Steele person — president and CEO Bill Steele. Talstra noted consultant Ralph Tomey recommended appointment of a north- board of directors as well as creation of an advisory com- mittee of northwest com- munily leaders to report to the board. City councillor David Hull said a northwest-rooted board of directors would connect northwestemers more directly with the future of the company and would make it more difficult for critics 10 condemn the com- pany as an NDP money pit. | He said the board of direc- tors is just one of the terms of the restructuring agree- ment that have gone un- fulfilled. “Te seems unfair that so many things that have been promised on the government New from BC TEL Mobility. 00 ns 22522 per month Starfoc 3000 Motorola Vibe . 7 AVE. | ars. ciiy AY CENTRE. whch MALL TERRACE KITIMAT TERRAGE 635-5333 632-5000 635-4943 --for:you-to choose: from: Freedom 300- 100 minutes anytime and 200 week- end minutes - with extra time just 20.. cants a minute. That's not as long as the five to 10-year periad market organizers had asked for. Councillor Val George hid proposed offering a five-year lease, but other councillors felt that was too long. “Three years is a long enough term,’ Linda Hawes said, adding it could be reviewed a year prior to it expiring, She was backed by coun- cillors Olga Power, Rich McDaniel and David Hull. Hull noted the city proba- bly wouldn’t have any plans for the property over the next five years, but other surrounding uses could change, affecting the availability of parking. “They've grown so large that spot is almost becoming too small already,”’ Hawes added. : Council is hoping the fectively run by a single : Xe eX He He NOW TOURING CANADA COAST TIO COAST.. x Elvis Presley * Garth Brooks * Niel Diamond * Roy Orbison x Blues Brother x* Tam Jones and MANY MORE... Market organizers were Strongly opposed to any move away from the park’ area, and gathered a series of petitions to demonstrate public support, ‘The community is very supportive of the Farmers’ Market staying in its Joca- tion,’ George noted. Ron Poole, the city’s chief administrative officer, said it appeared the proposal to move the market to the redeveloped Greig Ave. area was tainted in the cyes of market organizers by the city’s desire to attract a Strong developer to the for- mer Co-op property, “They felt the city wast using them as bait to get the big draw down there now,” Poole noted, Market organizer Lynne Christiansen said the group will likely go back {fo the city and ask council to reconsider a slightly longer term. t nWe're thinking iat five | (SPFingwall | | Springwall years is the very minimum | Chiromedic , Chiromedic we need-to work with,’ she 4 , Silver 1 Platinum sald, adding much time and energy has been spent over the last year on the dispute with the city.
