i 2 eS —_ THE WESTERN CANADIAN LUMBER WORKER 15 =LEGATES APPROVE MOTION RESTRUCTURE LOCAL DUES Ee) Delegates attending the 14th Annual Delegated Meeting of Local 1-417 IWA April 29 in Kamloops, approved an Ex- ecutive Board resolution to restructure the Local dues. The resolution, which will be voted on by the member- ship, calls for the monthly dues to be two hours pay per month based on the Southern Interior base rate. This will also include the $1.00 assess- ment for the Regional Strike Fund. Approximately 85 delegates representing all areas of the Local Union attended the meet. Visitors included Bill Botkin, IWA_ International Secretary-Treasurer; Wyman Trineer, Regional 1st Vice- President; Stan Parker, Regi- onal 3rd Vice-President; Jim Mitchell, President. of Local 1-424 Prince George; and Bob Schlosser, International As- sistant Director of Organiza- tion. Business of the conference included dealing with a num- ber of resolutions, electing delegates to the various con- ventions and approving the Financial and Officers’ Re- ports. In their Report the officers noted that the membership of the Local was close to the 2,000 mark, an increase of fifty percent in four years. This growth is an obvious re- flection of the fine organizing job the officers have conduct- ed in the Local Union: The officers also reported on the progress of negotiations, some of the problems experi- enced in dealing with UIC and Workmen’s Compensation claims plus grievances and ar- bitrations. Local Safety Director Jack Kerssens in his report to the meeting stated that there had been one fatality in the Local during the year and numerous serious accidents. He called on the members to help in eliminating some of the causes of these accidents by co-oper- ating with the Safety Commit- tees. Special Delegated Confer- ence delegates: Jack Kers- sens, Larry Jensen, Ted Mac- Donald, Kevin Kelly, Bill Hobbs, Larry Viers, Bob Smits, Aaron Ruppel. B.C. Federation of Labour convention delegates: Vic Fast, Bob Smits, Ted Mac- Donald, Larry Jensen, Larry Viers, Jack Kerssens. NDP convention delegates: Jack Kerssens, Vic Fast, Larry Jensen. Prior to adjournment, the meeting approved an emerg- ency resolution attacking the Social Credit government for its blatant use of the taxpay- ers money to conduct its po- litical radio programme “Ask Your Provincial Govern- ment.” A telegram of protest was sent to the government by the officers and the news media was informed of the confer- ence action. Following the meeting the delegates, their wives, friends and visitors enjoyed a fine banquet and gala evening of dancing. POSSIBLE SATURDAY MAIL DELIVERIES Postmaster-General Jean- Pierre Cote says he is not blaming letter carriers and postal clerks for a decrease in Post Office productivity. In a meeting with postal officials here, Cote said his recent remarks on declining productivity were simply to underline ‘a problem to which we had to address ourselves.”’ During a speech to the Van- couver Board of Trade, Cote had said that productivity had dropped 12.5 percent since 1965. One item on which Cote is working is slow delivery of materials mailed Fridays, and one solution might be to rein- State Saturday mail deliveries, he said. “T will be meeting with postal officials and unions across the country to try to improve the system, and if the renewal of Saturday mail delivery turns out to be the only solution, then I will put it into effect.
