SOLID WASTE RECYCLING STUDY At. the regular Council Meeting held on September llth, 1972 the foliowing resolution was passed "That as recommended in a report from the City Engineer, September 8th, 1972 the Solid Waste Recycling Study prepared by W.R.E. Hickman and Jens C. Jensen be referred to the Public Works Committee and Environmental Protection Sub-Committee for recommendation and report back to a forth coming Council Meeting with Mr. Hickman to be in attendance to formally present the Study and answer any questions." The Committee and Sub-Committee have met and discussed the Reacyciing Study on several occasions and now submit the following comments and recom- mendations to the Council for consideration. (1) Copies of the Study be made available to the general public in accordance with the City's sale of documents policy. (2) Letters of thanks and appreciation be sent to the authors of the Report, W.R.E. Hickman and J.C. Jensen, to Dr. R. Cameron and his collegues at U.B.C. and to the Poilution Control Board in Victoria. ; (3) The 1973 Council consider applying the residential garbage pick- . up standard (2 cats per week) to all commercial and industrial establishments. This would mean that most if not all of these establishments would have to arrange their own private garbage pickup. One of the reasons for this recommendation is contained on page 6 of the Report. Another reason is the fact that with- out a reduction in the volume of garbage now collected, the City will soon be faced with the purchase of aa addition Garbage Packer Unit because of the continuing rapid residential growth in the City. (4) Perhaps the most unique part of che report is the preparation and the results of the Reclamation Survey. Every effort should be made to implement some form of solid waste recycling as a result of the favourable citizen response to the Reclamation Survey. continued page 2. /
