Aé - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, August 27, 2003 RCMP used a taser | for very good reason Dear Sir: I find myself at a loss at the CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD ease that Mr. Manuel Sanche z (“Taser use questioned,” The Terrace Standard, Aug. 20, 2003) is able to con- demn the RCMP for the use of the new taser on his wife, eSpecially taking into account that he wasn’t present when the incidents leading tip to the tasering occurred. a -Would he have pre- ferred that the RCMP use the other non-lethal tools available to them? According: to the arti- cle, the baton and the pep- per spray were both con- sidered, but neither one was in the best interest of Ms. Elsie Robinson. Imagine the furore that would be created by the public if the RCMP mem- bers involved were to use a club on a lady in a wheelchair. The pepper spray couldn't be used due to her medical condition, What other means do the RCMP have available to them when a person, as it is al- leged, is spitting on them and attempting to bite them? Unions Dear Sir: My anger started to build fast as I read the start of the letter to he edi- tor from Pete Weeber (‘Keep up the good ‘work’, The Terrace Stan- dard, Aug. 6, 2003) and just as fast subsided and changed to giggles. [ say “Right on, Pete.” Over the years as the Terrace and area has crumbled, ‘very little has been said abaut the union nae workers ,and. how, their... greed has driven the: last spikes into’ our combined caskets. But who can .blame them for wanting nice big fat raises with the nurses, teachers and our govern- ment all getting more for doing less. I was in a trades union for three years and in thal time I watched as the union reps stoad at the po- dium and told us how “we were being taken advan- tage of” and how “we were worth so much more” and that we should strike to get il. I watched as the older members would go into a frenzy, beating their chest's in agreement, But we were very well paid if not over paid and it just did not make sense, Well, in three years there was two strikes and we never did recover what — we lost in wages. I left the union during the second strike and was glad to work for less because |] would rather work then not, For me the union was more like a cult then a fel- lowship and I would rather think for myself. Don't misunderstand me. Many years ago: the union was a great institu- tion and did a lot to help the working class but now all they do drive inflation up and put good people out work. Take for example the furore over a Petro-Can truck crossing the picket line and the request that Should they have drawn their side arms and shot her? I don’t think so. That leaves the taser. , Ms. Robinson is report- ed to have a medical con- dition that makes it harder for her body to heal from wounds. Knowing this, why would she not comply with. the. RCMP “in... the. first - place? : . How about after the tas- er was shown? Did Ms. Robinson think that she would come out this ordeal unhurt? The RCMP. members are dedicated men and women who. for reasons that [ cannot figure oul, choose to work in a profes- sion where they are .ex- pected to wear a bullet- proof vest and a gun eve- tyday when they. go. to work. The vest and the gun are not there for show. They are there because the members are sometimes shot at (remember Lori White in Kitimat), and have it at the bottom of the grave ‘plot as the workers at Bu- rocan argue whoa has the job to fill in the hole, Give your head a shake guys and do the right thing. Question everything your The Mail Bag they sometimes have to use deadly force. I think that it is high . time that we, as a soctelty, begin to show the RCMP the respect it deserves, and not complain unneces- sarily when they take the time to decide. which sub- duing method is best for the person they are at- tempting to detain. “Ido Hope that Ms. Rob- inson wounds heal quickly, but she’ should be held ac- - countable for her actions | that led up to the tasering incident. Tf we all stood responsi- ble for our actions, then maybe the RCMP could be able to retire the taser for lack of use. Maybe one day they could retire their guns and vests as well,. again for lack of use. Wouldn’t that be a bet- ter environment’ to raise our kids in?
