Nursing
numbers
boost
given

THE PROVINCIAL gov-
ernment is slowly releas-
ing details of its plan to
increase the number of
nurses,

It’s set aside $500,000
to cover the costs of hav-
ing registered nurses ob-
tain training in specialty
areas such as intensive
care units and emergency
rooms.

It will provide up to
$3,500 per person for
books, tuition and fees to
attract back nurses who
have left their profession.

At least 25 specialty
education rewards will be
set aside for nurses work-
ing in rural areas and they
have until Jan. 15, 2002 to
apply.

The deadline for those
wishing to return to nursing
is a month later,

This latter program is
intended to answer critics
who say there are large
numbers of nurses who
have left the profession but
who might be willing to
return if given incentives.

And it’s also meant for
foreign-trained nurses who
either don’t have full pro-
vincial registration re-
quirements or who are
working at noti-nursing
jobs.

As well, nursing stu-
dents will have 20 per cent
of the amount of their stu-
dent loans forgiven for
each year they work in
areas where there are nur-
sing shortages.

Terrace is on the list of
places where there are
shortages as are Kitimat,
Prince Rupert, Smithers
and Prince George.
