Giesbrecht fills senior office posts HELMUT GIESBRECHT has filled two key positions in his cabinet office with his long lime constituency as- sislant aud an experienced political aidey Gail Mi#ay, who ran Giesbrecht’s constituency office here since he was first elected in 1991 is now his excculive assistant, She'll continue to be based in Ter- race and act on behalf of Giesbrecht when his dutics as public service minister keep him away from the riding. : The experienced political aide is John Luton, who is now Giesbrecht’s special as- sistant. He most recently worked under contract - for Moe Sihota, Giesbrechi’s predecessor as public ser- vice minisler. One of Luton's earlier jobs in his career was as an aide to Jim Fulton when be represented the Skeena riding in Oltawa. Murray and Luton were hired under — orders-in- council, which are docu- ments signed by members of the cabinet. People hired through orders-in-council are sepa- tate from the regular civil service, They’re more than likely working in a political capac- ity to cabinet ministers while those ministers tend to their portfolios, People appointed through orders-in-council stand to be dismissed should those min- isters leave office or should the government change hands. Giesbrecht said Luton has already been working on Kitimat health care issues and will handle his cor- respondence. Murray, be said, will have a beefed up role as Gies- brecht’s representative in the riding when he isn't available because of cabinet duties. poe , . Helmut Giesbrecht Two other people were hired under — orders-in- council and Giesbrecht ex- pects to get a fifth person, a ministerial assistant. **The ministerial assistant acts as a direcl link to the public on all sorts of. is- sues,”’ said Giesbrecht, Salaries for the political appointees range from $40,000 to $50,000 a year. In addition to those hirings, Vicki Fenton, who was a part time worker at Giesbrecht’s office here, has now been brought on full time to take over Murray’s former duties.
