8 Terrace Review — Wednesday, May 18, 1988. oe - Peaks’ Brady = — runnerup ins divisional | Out of 22 Northwest division - gymnasts at the B.C, divisional gymnastics championships at ‘Delta on the May 7 weekend, Terrace Peaks’ Jenny Brady was the top performer with second overall in the 34-participant open age group. Jenny took first in the vault, sixth in beam, eighth in bars and 12th in floor. Teammate Kris Fairless placed ninth overall in the same group. Brady and Fairless’ showing enabled the Northwest open team win the bronze medals for overall teams. Others on the team included Rose Lenser and Traci Tomas of Terrace, and Teri Walter and Stephanie Blackburn of Kitimat. Another top finisher was Ter- race’s Lindsey Roberts with a fifth-place ribbon beam in the argo class. Because of their high placings, Brady and Fairless both received invitations to a summer develop- ment camp in Vancouver where they would train for one week under elite coaches. The 17-year-old Brady is a Grade 12 student in Terrace, and just recently recovered enough from a 1984 injury te be able to compete again. The severe ankle injury four years ago will require surgery in future, but Brady will continue even though not completely fit. Points standings for Terrace, First golf The Skeena Valley Golf and Country Club is hosting the first major golf tournament of the season this Saturday and Sun- day. It’s the 36-hole scramble tourney for mixed teams of four players, with the top prize being a trip for two to Whistler Moun- tain. Club members pay an entry fee of $30 per player. Seniors set for Games . Only a few events lack zone 10 competitors for the first annual B.C. Senior Games at Vernon next month. Zone 10, which covers Ter- race, Prince Rupert, Kitimat and the Queen Charlottes, will have active participants in all listed sports except bridge, chess, lawn bowling and table tennis. Zone co-ordinator Arlene Bergh said efforts to find people aged 55 and over for the aforementioned events have met with no success, Five-pin bowling should be settled by this weekend. Horseshoes and men’s slo-pitch softball should also be lined up before the end of May. Financially, the seniors seem to be set. A grant from B.C. Lotto should be here this week, and contributions from the three major centers will likely balance things off. Seniors not taking part, but interested in seeing the games, can travel with the team using the extra bus seats. Contact Mrs. Bergh at the Happy Gang Centre on Kalum Street. Kennedy keeps going Former Terrace resident Mike Kennedy is continuing to add to his laurels in the world of kick- boxing. The 23-year-old lightweight fighter won the super lightweight Canadian title at the world championships in Van- couver in March. Then on the May 7 weekend, he took the 135-pound class at the ‘‘Belt- Comes-Back’’ event in Kamloops. Coach Barry Adkins says Kennedy is a real comer and he’s looking forward to Mike even- tually producing some profes: sional titles, Adkins says Kennedy has only three bouts to his credit — two for national title. He’s already © been named to the Canadian team competing in late August in Japan. Adkins expects Kennedy to compete in about six more bouts this year, including ome next month in Vancouver. ‘‘He’s . building up the experience he needs to turn pro,”’ Adkins said. He also told us that Kennedy is rapidly becoming a favorite with fans and the press. Mike, who fights out of the White Crane club in Kamloops, took up the sport about one year ago.
