Or, if you must, be prepared to sleep in the corridors, cook ‘your own food, share a bathroom with 80 other patients and bring your own medicine. Overcrowding, staff shortages, outdated equipment, strikes, crumbling buildings, unpaid bills, dirt and smells are common features in Italy's public hospitals, according to recent press surveys. Official figures show there are 120 people in need of hospital treat- ment in Italy for every 100 available beds and that the country has only half as many nurses as it needs. In one major Rome, hospital, the Policlinico Umberto I, doctors say standards have sunk so low that patients’ lives corruption, insufficient planning, rising costs and a series of unfinished reforms are blamed for the chaotic state of the” public hospital sector, which last year ran up deficit of $4.7 billion. WELFARE LEFT BEHIND The chronic decay of its hospitals makes Italy look a poor cousin of its neighbors and supports arguments that social welfare has been left behind in the scramble for industrial develop- ment. ; Many of the hospitals, like the Cardarelli in Naples, the biggest . in southern Italy, where basins and lavatories are broken, were built before the Second World War. In Rome, a magistrate has ordered an in- vestigation into the situation at the 3,750-bed Policlinico, which is one of the major teaching after reading a report by doctors at the hospital who said they could no fouger accept respon- sibil Their reports said basic hygiene standards were tiouted, emergency services were in- adequate, essential inedicines were lacking and there was an acute shortage of staff. Problems at the Policlinico, where some 32,000 medical students are expected to gain their . practical experience for exams and professional careers, management to. empty all but 1,200 beds.
