Lie Detector Tests Back IWA INTERNATIONAL FALLS, Minn.—IWA mem- ber Donald Foyt took a lie detector test..He passed it. A guard at the Minnesota & Ontario Paper Company took a lie detector test. He obviously flunked it. The result: 1. Foyt was reinstated in his job with back pay and full. seniority, pension and vacation benefits. 2. The guard was fired. - Robert Walls, business agent of IWA Local 4-33, re- ported that the guard charged Foyt-with stealing a hand saw from the company on Sep- tember 11, 1962. The union immediately filed a grievance and, after a hearing two days later, the company ordered a six-month suspension for Foyt. Although the evidence was circumstantial and question- able, the suspension was up- held by the company mana- ger. The local union then re- ferred the case to arbitration. At the suggestion of Irvin Anderson, IWA regional vice president, Foyt took the lie detector test to provide addi- tional evidence for the arbi- tration case. Results of the test were. sent to the com- pany. - Walls stated that the com- ‘ pany then asked the guard to submit to a like test. A few days later the company an- nounced it: was revoking the suspension order and Foyt returned to his job January 23. “We haven’t seen the re- sults of the guard’s lie detec- Member tor test,” Walls said, “but we are satisfied that he wasn’t telling the truth at any time during the case and the whole thing was possibly an attempt by the guard to gain personal favor with the company.” Local 1-80 Sub-Local Elections The Annual Meeting of the Ladysmith Sub-Local of Lo- cal 1-80, IWA, held March 5, elected the following officers: Chairman, G.
