The IWA Coast Negotiating Committee has reached agreement with Forest Industrial Relations on major wage revisions for a number of categories in the coast section of the sawmill industry. The Coast Committee is now meeting with FIR on revisions ‘or the entire logging wage scale and after that revisions will be undertaken for the tradesmen and plywood mills. rOP ORGANIZER» ‘MIKE SEKORA RETIRES FROM UNION Union July 1st, after 29 years of dedicated service to the esevation ° sty Mike Sekora... after 29 years Over these years Mike has rot only seen the Union grow to 4s present size but was res- donsible for Region 1 gaining several hundred certifications and thousands of members. These were tough years for Anion organizers, a fact which t deter Mike from visiting Locals 1-417, 1-423, 1-206 ained sufficient the Communist split in 1948. He held that office until the affairs of the District were cleared up and elections were held in 1949. From the job of Secretary- Treasurer Mike went back to his first love — organizing. His help was badly needed in Local 1-405 and Local 1-424 where the membership had dropped drastically due to the 1948 revolution. He proved equal to the task and in the months that followed did yeoman service in getting the Locals back on their feet. His services were also used during the bitter Northern Interior strike in 1953 which lasted 102 days and ended in complete victory for the Union. In the 50’s, the Union em- ployed Mike’s talents on the Prairies where few mills or camps were organized and wages and working conditions were atrocious. From the “fruits of his labour, Locals 1- 206 and 1-207 were granted charters. For the past few years Mike has been used extensively in his own Local Union 1-217 and also Local 1-357 to organize a variety of operations. However, this didn’t prevent him from organizing in such places as The Pas, Manitoba, Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan, and a host of other places at the Same time. For Mike it’s been a long road from 1944 when he joined the IWA while working as a shipper at the old B.C. Fir and Cedar mill on False Creek.
