Alderman Mabbett then mentioned as Chairman of the Public Works Committee with Alderman Thompson as Co-Chairman, his pleasure in seeing several major projects near completion in the last year as some of these projects have taken many years to reach this stage such as the widening of the Lougheed Highway - including improvements to its major intersections, construction of Shaughnessy Street (formerly Chester Street), sidewalks, landscaping, and lighting along the Lougheed Highway, upgrading of a number of City water systems on both the north and south side as well as local improvements - rebuilding streets and storm sewers and Phase one of the City's downtown street lighting; also, tenders have been called for the first stage of improvements to the dyking and pumping facilities in the City and work should commence soon. Alderman Mabbett advised the first mile of the south Mary Hill By-pass contract has been let and this also was of interest to the Public Works Committee. Alderman Mabbett also referred to new projects planned for 1978, additional assistance to Senior Citizens in the City through the planned Senior Citizens Complex addition, tax “rebate on sewer and water rates for Senior Citizens living in their own homes, upgrading of garbage pick-up, and upgrading of Prairie Avenue and Pitt River Road through assistance from the Provincial Government, as part of their plan «:o divert traffic from the Lougheed Highway. Alderman Mabbett advised he will continue to work towards more industry in Port Coquitlam.
