page © Guild News by Jane Mavtheews After a short break over che holidays (when you get back to work isn't it amazing how 2 weeks seems to blend inte just a few days!), it's time to get back in the saddle. It's been very busy this first week into the new year, trying co finish off monrh-end, eaking on the newsletter editor role again, and carrying on with plans for markecing the book! 1998 came to a climactic end with the much anticipated launching of Made of Clay and the ensuing phone calls, interviews, and notes of praise! During the ceremony prior to the unveiling [JF the book, Linda was presented with [Ir bouquets of flowers from individual members and the Board of Directors, as well as a wonderful gift certificate for the Fish House Restaurante in Stanley Park from the book particip- ang. In the excitement of the moment, I forgot to read aloud a certificare thar was incended to accompany the gift certificate, so 1 have included it here for all to see! Now thar che festivities are over with, it is time te sell these books! have a louder voice here on Granville Island. Asso often is the case, we all ger chained to our places of work and don't get out and about much, so we can get forgotten. As part of this initianve, | have volunteered to join che Granville Island 20th Anniversary Planning Commitee which ideally represents all interested parties, but for which [ am the firse representative for a non-performance arts group! | find this so astounding because the many studios and galleries on Granville [sand contribute significantly to its appeal. There is already a sense chat the book has put the Potters Guild of BC on the map, so to speak, and [ plan to and down 17% from our projected figures, Given the current economic situation, this can be seen as fairly positive relatively speaking, but difficult for the Gallery tc absorb given that expenses have typically been increasing, The year-end numbers will be compiled in-house before mid- February ce be sent on to the accountant for che review. The 1999 exhibits in the Gallery of BC Ceramics are scheduled as follows: February - The Makers of Made Of Clay, March - Julia Maika Season to Taste, April- Potters Guild of BC Group Exhibit, Tea Party, May - Tessa Windr, June - Gorden Hutchens, July - Laurie Rolland, On behalf of those represented in the book we would like to extend to Linda Doherty our most sincere thanks and gratitude in developing and bringing "Made Of Clay" to publication. Congratulations Linda, for your unrelenting pursuit in helping make this endeavour a reality. Ma) August - Deb Taylor, September - Kathryn O'Regan, Oct - Suzy Birstein, Nov - Terry Ryals, and Dee - Potters Guild of BC Group Holiday Exhibit. Exhibiting areists will be receiving an information letter from the Gallery later this month, The February exhibit, to be set up January 21, will be on waril March 4. We plan to use this presen- tation, 1s another opportunity to ae promote Made of Clay. On March Many marketing initiatives are underway, including getting Made Of Clay reviewed in the various clay publications, and of course distributing it in the states. There have been numerous articles in the local and national media about the book - if you see any references made to it in your local paper, please send a copy to the office for our ‘press clipping’ file! The deadline for applications for the newsletter editor position is January 15th. Lanticipate the newsletter committee will have several interested and talented people to chose from. In che meantime, the newsletter is being produced by yours truly, which explains why this issue & lare - as will be the February issue too! By March, we should be back on track, Thanks for your patience. With the March issue, we anticipate mailing out the current membership list - if you do not wish to have your name and address, etc. included on the list, please contact the Guild office mo later than Friday, February 12th. One of my New Year’s Resolutions is to further this as much as] can. Maybe this will be the year thac the windows will be replaced in the office; they don't close properly and the resulting cracks are currently stuffed with newspaper to diminish the wind chill effect (fingerless gloves are the fashion mainstay around here!). Many members may not know chat 1 have been the secretary of the Granville [sland Business and Community Association since last March - our mandate is to work with CMHC on behalf of che members to meet such needs as signage, parking/ security, awareness, coc, This can prove to be a long, slow process, but it certainly helps to be aware of what's going on in your own backyard!
