Aé - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, November 6, 2002 Writer is suspicious of NWBC’s motives Dear Sir: NWBEC says they have no roads to logging sites for this winter. Truth ~ They have over 5000 miles of logging roads. There are five con- tractors logging on their property, .on.-their: roads, right now. The logs are being ex- ported. NWEC says 30 per cent of their cut is locked up- behind the. slide on the Capper River... ©. Truth -—:That road has been open for a month, and there is logging up there now. NWBEC says they need to log (but not mill) to keep loggers working. Truth — That: company “sold” standing: timber ‘to contractors and is making 20 dollars a cubic meter sitting doing nothing, :let- ting contractors ‘take all the risks. NWEC will auction off three more blocks to con- tractors because “we don’t want to spend money: on inventory we aren't able.to mill.” : Truth - The logs will be exported and milled in- Oregon, and our mill site sits idle. NWEC says we must make a new deal with the IWA Terrace so we can lower our labour costs. Truth — Their mill in Kitwanga is [WA and has not been shut down. That’ mill makes money, Terrace mill is more ef- - ficient than Kitwanga, and has never lost money. Truth ~ West Fraser mill, Terrace, is IWA and CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD The Mail Bag have to be time for train- ing workers. Truth - When the mill was closed there was a staff of very good workers, who will need no training, linless NWBC hires an en- Ure new crew 10 spite the union. : _ And that is what his is all about. That is better than some communities that have al-- ready been given the news because no one else ran. Actually, I picked up a nomination package’ from o city hall for the job, but as. . 1 procrastinate as well as. the best of them, I could not (actually decided not) divulge all the lawyeristic mumbo jumbo that is re- quired in a nomination - package. Besides, what kind of fool would vote for me. Probably someone - just as foolish as myself who might even consider a jab in municipal politics. The way I see it, you’re either a bandit or a crook™. to do that job. Self interest seems to just fall into place once ° you're there. Maybe | don't want to go there. So, we have Bob and Jack. Could we call: them of slightly different views? The funniest part is that Jack probably made fair coin oul of defending people like Bob in defence | motions. I smell a conflict of in- terest, or was that just leaves neighbours yard? Not a big deal, you should take all the consid- eration you need to reach | your decision. Phonetics work ‘Dear Sir: I read the recent article, “School trustees differ on literacy plan.” 1 am a retired’ teacher. I agree with. Pete Weeber that most children would greatly - benefit from being taught the phonetic system. My daughter ‘did not: receive. phonetic ‘instruc- tion. She became a sight reader. As an adult she still has trouble with the pronunciation of. some words. My san did receive phonetic: instruction, otherwise he would have had difficulty reading. - Phonics. and: spelling are closely: related. If you “area sight reader you probably can‘spell. If you are not a sight reader, phonics is very necessary. When | was doing learning assistant teaching, I used a book, “Why Johnny Can’! Read”, written by Rudolph Flesch. The author's son at twelve was unable to read, so Mr. Flesch decided to use the phonetic method which he developed for his book. There ate two copies of the book in the Hbrary. if parents are interested in helping their children. the book has excellent instructions in the back.
