Al0- The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, March 28, 2001 Local college expands second year courses NORTHWEST COM- MUNITY College is re- storing science programs cut four years ago. The courses to be in place for this fall will mean students can: earn a two-year associate degree, allowing them a black transfer to a university for a fully-fledged four-year degree program, “We lost 50 [course] - sections from the Terrace campus, predominantly in the - science area,” said~ college academic head Rocque Berthiaume last week of the cuts. “What we're doing now is restoring second year science courses, Students will be able -ta transfer those courses in a block,” he said. “There may not be the diversity there was in the past, but students will be able to get an associate of science degree.” Also being beefed up are arts offerings to permit students to obtain a two- year associate of arts de- gree. Courses are not only being boosted here toward associate degrees but in Prince Rupert as well. “In Smithers, students can earn a complete first year and some second year university transfer credit courses, The courses cover 20 subject areas, ranging from anthropalogy to ecanomics to biology to chemistry. Focus on nursing ONE BENEFIT of adding more science courses at Northwest Community College here is to provide transfer credits to nursing programs elsewhere, says college president Stepha- nie Forsyth. And while the college does not yet have any for- mal arrangement to offer nursing training in can- junction with a university, | offering those science courses is a start down # that road, she said. “We're doing what we | can with what we have,” Forsyth said last week. She foresees a day Stephanie Forsyth when northwestern students won’t have to leave the area to obtain a four-year nursing degree. Toward that end, the college has been talking with the University of Northern B.C. and the University of British Columbia. UNBC and the College of New Cale- donia in Prince George, for instance, have a joint pro- gram whereby a student takes the first two years of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at the callege and the final two years at the university. Nursing courses are required at the second year level. The situation is different at UBC where students seeking nursing’ degrees begin their formal training at year three, after two years of taking arts and sciences courses. Students can take those first two years at UBC or transfer -in. ‘To -be ‘accepted as ‘a’ transfer, a. student must “have “aniassed:-48 “credits> “Among: ‘those credit courses must be English and biology equivalents to what 4 person can take at UBC.
