The respective winners for ‘A’ and ‘C’ events were Terrace teams skipped by Rusty Blanes anid Vicki Gardiner. For ‘B’ and ‘D' events it. was Smithers’ four- somes skipped by Yvonne Col- lison and Susan Jackson. Blanes knocked off Helen Joseph of Cassiar 10-6 in the ‘A’ final. In semi-finals action it was Blanes over Irene Ritchy of Ter- race and Joseph over Kim Mac- Dougall of Terrace. Collison beat out former Ter- race resident Ans Hendry of Kamloops 8-5. Collison won her semi-final over Terrace’s Jackie Clowns, shooting, snow attend Shames opening Contributed by the’ Shames Mountain Ski Corporation Last Saturday greeted the Grand Opening of the Shames Mountain ski area with a skiff of new snow and the sun just peeking through the clouds. More than 600 people enjoyed the celebration. The excitement of this long- awaited day began with a bang — -a. black powder salute by four members of Terrace’s Black Pow- ~ der Club. This was followed by a Shames Mountain Ski School - instructors’ parade down = the mountain through the Grand Open- ing ribbon at the bottom of the chairlift, a congratulatory speech by Skeena MLA Dave Parker, and a welcome and thank-you from Shames president Gerry Martin. Throughout the day, Heather’s Balloon Magic clowns painted the faces of children and adults alike, the A&W Rootbear and the Hos- tess Munchies character handed out goodies to the children and skied the mountain, while inflated balioons from McDonalds, Pepsi, Heather’s and Mr. Chiistie’s Oreo cookies towered over the celebra- tion. , The Shames day lodge is now fully operational and the cozy Chateau Atco’s have been retired to the annals of Shames history. The day lodge has heat, running water, flush toilets and full kitchen facilities, All ski school programs, ladies’ day and equipment rental are set up. The lounge is just awaiting final approval of the liquor license. , With more than four metres of snow at the top of the T-bar and almost three months of skiing still to be enjoyed at Shames this sea- son, it appears the mountain resort is off to a good start in its opening year. - Munson while Hendry took. out Berga Anderson of Terrace. Gardiner beat out clubmate Val Bakker in her semi, Kathy Simpson, also, of Terrace, did likewise to clubmate Louise Radford. In the ‘C’ event, Val Flint of Prince Rupert was an 8-4 loser to Jackson in the final. Jackson defeated Dawn Garner of Terrace in one semi while Flint beat out teammate Penny Brown in the other one. The spiel attracted 38 teams. MORE SPIELS As the curling season slows down, three major events re- main to come in our area. The 40th annual Marine Men’s spiel comes up March 7 to 10 at Prince Rupert. It has four events, 48-team entry limit, and a $240 entry fee (plus GST). To enter, phone the rink at 624 -6240 or 624 - 4615. Following the Marine from March 15 to 17, it’s the Prince Rupert Ladies’ spiel featuring four events and more than $4,000 in prizes. The Rusty Blanes rink of Terrace took top spot in the ‘A’ division of the annual Terrace Ladies’ Valentine Bonspiel on the Feb. 16 weekend. Another Terrace rink led by Vicki Gardiner took 'C’ event, Fun hockey draws 16 teams Kitimat teams won two of the four divisions at the ninth an- nual 16-team private fun hockey tournament held on Feb. 17 weekend, T.L.T. took ‘A’ section with a §-2 all-Kitimat win over the Caps in the final. Mike Correia and Gord Young were named in respective most valuable players. ‘D’ division went to Weldal 8-3 in another all-Kitimat final. MVP’s were Rob Urbanowski and Kelly Marsh. Stewart won ‘C’ division over Ocelot by a 10-1 score. The ‘MVP’s were Troy Kaye and Kurt Rathenberger. Terrace’s Inn of the west downed Tricks 9-4 to capture ‘B’ section.
