t - Athletes chosen for - Pacific games OTTAWA (CP)- The Canadian. Track and Field Association CTFA has selected 34 athletes to compete in the Pacific Conference. Games in Australia in December. Athletes competing in the recent World Cup track meet’ in Dusseldorf, West Germany, were selected automatically with the ’ ‘balance of the team picked after last weekend's national championships. The team includes 23 men and 1i-women. Ron Wallingford, technical director of CTFA, said Canada will be com- peting against Japan, the U.S., New Zealand and Austrailia. The games, held every four years, began in Japan in 1969 with Canada winning 14 medals including three gold and three silver. At the next competition in Toronto in 1973, Canada picked up 20 medals f] in- ’ eluding four gold and eight silver. Wallingford said .Canada will be doing well this year if they come back with 20 medals. - “This meet falls in bet- ween our indoor and outdoor season and some of our top athletes may not be able to make it,” he said.
