Worsip vening Evengal yen fe WEL eee te aby Gat It was about a year. after he. was: best ‘suited for: As: he ' came to Canada from Switzerland that 24 year old Charlie Binner had the accident. During 1965, his first year in Canada, he had concentrated on learning English; for several years after the accident he concentrated on regaining thé use of legs. : In 1966, Charlie was working - as chokerman for a ‘logging contractor in Terrace. As he was settling chokers one fine spring day, a bulldozer operating nearby snagged a dead tree. The. tree came crashing down.across his head and shoulders. His. back was . broken. The night of the accident he ‘was flown to Vancouver General - Hospital for emergency surge- ty. And that’s where the Workmen’s Compensation Board . Rehabiliitation Consultant first met him. Charlie had lost the use of both legs; he was a paraplegic. If and when his back mended, . physicians predicted “slow progress”. Vancouver General Hospital doctors suggested that Charlie attend the G.F. Strong Rehabilitation Centre in Vancouver . and .that's what - Charlie did -- first, as an in- patient and then, when the therapy had hecome effective, as an out-patient. Soon he began to walk, but his right leg needed the support of a brace, and his left leg had lost sensation. He graduated from crutches to a cane, The ‘slow progress continued, The Workmen’s Compensation Board sponsored him in a. Drivers Training Course and provided hand controls for his car. He could now live in the community and - drive to the G.F.. Strong Rehabilitation Centre for treat- ment. Several problems presented themselves to Charlie. As a logger he was finished, his physical condition accounted for that. How would he be able to find suitable employment? Who would hire him? Terrace was “home.”’ He had a house and three acres of land waiting for him. His’ friends and relatives were there. Getting back to..Terrace was very important to him, but Terrace would have to wait. He needed further treatments. His right - leg was still very weak, his left leg had little feeling , Charlie’ walked with a pronounced limp. Charlie was admitted to the Workmen's Compensation Boa- rd Rehabilitation Clinie for treatment. His ability to-walk improved. wizh physiotherapy and remedial therapy. Soon he advanced to the Industrial Department where he could discover. what type of work he “| Real Tasco is not nublished ‘Board or thy the Government at Ba sh Columbla, . shiav Back bor pleasure. ’ moved in and out of the welding, upholstry, mechanics, sheet metal and carpentry shops, he proved -himself..an eager and able worker, He. showed a special aptitude for welding. As a young man in Switzerl- and he had had some training in the welding and sheet metal . industry. This. previous experience helped . Charlie decide, His next job would be in . welding--but in Terrace. He wanted to return to Terrace. ‘ Doctors at the Workmen's Compensation Rehabilitation Clinic put. him on a_ special exercise program to strengthen his back and legs. In a few months, Charlie declared that he was ready to begin a full time job. His. doctors were not so optimistic. ' Arnim Sanders Welding Ltd, of Terrace ‘agreed to place Charlie on a six months job- training program. At last, Charlie could return to Terrace. But the physical strain of a full time job proved to be too much, and his back began to give him a great deal of pain. Charlie was unable to complete the six months training program. He returned to the Vancouver General Hospital where he underwent surgery, and then was readmitted to the Workmen’s Compensation Board Rehabilitation Clinic: -more exercise, hydrotherapy and work in the sheet metal and welding areas. _In the meantime, Mr. “Arnim Sanders of Sanders Welding, Terrace, contacted the Workmen's Compensation Boa-. td Rehabilitation consultants to find out when Charlie could return to work. He said that Charlie was a fine worker but | that his disability prohibited him from doing some of the . work in the shop. Nevertheless, Mr. personal interest in Charlie, and said that he was eager to assist him in attempting to work out his vocational rehabilitation plans. ~ Thanks to the therapy, a determined spirit and an interested and humane employer, ‘Charlie was able to relurn«' to”: Arnim Sanders Welding within a few months and complete the training course. He has been employed there now for four years. In its own way, this story is a success story. Charlie Binner is still a partial paraplegic. But he is now able to perform a full time job without discomfort. He. enjoys what he does, and takes pride in the steady progress he has made. ma husband and 1 helped them get Sanders expressed a- The town of Arborg, Man., 76 miles north of Winnipeg, gets its name from an Icelandic word (meaning “river town,’ beer or displa ed by the Lor cat “Dear Ann Le Landers: A college. ‘friend and his wife ‘moved. to’ this city. five yedrs ago.
