SSULRULERERURRUREEUR EER EE REE 5 bs 7 > - FOREST SAFETY Otto McDonald, Port Alberni, Writes: On the afternoon of Friday the 18th, the falling and Scaling department was called In for its quarterly safety Meeting. An argument soon developed Over what was to be on the agenda. Fallers and _ scalers 3 Wished to discuss questions Telating to their safety — Matters such as blowing of Stumps on the right of way; falling trees on the low side of Toads for quick easy logging, but a dangerous practise for fallers; the question of noisy equipment working close to fallers (two men having been hurt already, this probably being the main Cause), The company maintained that there can be no large amount of timber laying in the woods so that the ambrosic beatle does not damage the fall and bucked timber. To which a scaler replied that the heads of this company must realize that the destruction of the beetle or damage to some wood comes second to our safety, though the company seems to _ think otherwise. Having no other resource for their complaints, fifty of the “falling department walked out of the meeting, even though told by management they would not be paid. Ten or twelve remained to see what took place. The fallers and scalers seem to have had enough of the cut and dried policy the company is pushing. | Speed Drive b ehind - it up!
