ZIMMERMAN — THE NASS VALLEY community of "Kincolith suffered a major loss last week-as its community centre burned to the ground Dec. 21. The blaze happened just hours after _ Tesidents had gathered in the facility for - the annual villase-government hosted _ Christmas banquet. Chief councillor George Moore says - the fire came as a shock to everyone in» the tiny Nisga’a village at the mouth of ~ the Nass River. Volunteer fire. fighters from Kinco- lith, also known as Gingolx, responded to the blaze after the alarm was raised around 4:30 a.m. By 6 a.m. the building ‘was completely engulfed, says:Moore, and firefighters went into protection , . mode to prevent the fire from spread- ing to nearby: homes. Volunteer fire-fighters from Green- ville and Canyon City also responded . to the fire but New Aiyansh volunteers were unable to: “get to the community © From front because of road conditions. ” “It affects. us. remendously,” says Moore of the centre’s loss. “We have used that building exten- sively for everything from commu- nity recreation to memorial services . where many of our elders have laid at state during the memorial services. weddings, annual celebrations such as Hobiyee, any community celebrations that took place, meetings and Public - dinners.” The community's reservoir was not able to handle the demand for water and its pump system broke down while fire fighters attacked the blaze. They then pulled water from a dam that has not been used ina long time. says Moore. That water is not suitable for drink- ing and the community was placed'on a boil water advisory. Aqua Clear’ bottlers from Terrace trucked approximately 1,500 gallons, _ of water to Kincolith the afternoon of. Dec. 21. Offers of donations have spilled into - the tiny village since word of the fire ‘spread. : “We have been informed that there are a number of donations.’ financial contributions that are being made and we've contacted the Royal Bank and "they've set up a community fund where those monies can be deposited.” Moore said. He’s grateful that the community is located in the north where people from all communities have offered help. par- ticularly from other Nisga’a villages and Terrace. fo “This community is — thank- ful that no lives were lost espe- cially at the height of the blaze.” Moore said. ; “We're thankful for the cooperation ~ of the community, the local authori- _ ties and to all the volunteer fire depart- ment. . “They don’t get paid to do this...they put themselves at risk to make. sure ev- eryone else is safe and there's no way to thank. them for that.” 4 3 - Power line decision nears | . That’ s the. general area the Alaskans : favour when it - comes to running a line from their planned hydro: electric facilities and across the border into B. C: to > hook up to the 7 - provincial grid. Talstra supports .any plan to run power to the north and the idea of having the Alaskans run power from here down’ to the lower 48 states: > “If the Alaskans do‘develop power and they want to sell the surplus and use our lines, they’ll have to.rent space on those lines and that will provide money to help pay for those lines,” he said last week. : Comments made by another BCTC official, Doug Little, at another meeting of Alaskans appear to back up those made by Barrett. . ‘Minutes from a Nov. 14, 2006 ‘meeting of an Alaskan * group studying the idea of sending power for sale through - B.C. indicate Little said the province would also be making" a power line decision early in 2007. As for the general power expansion, Talstra said Terrace he said: ment. “Tt w ill. provide continuity and stability in the region,” Any plan by BCTC would have to bring. an ‘overall ap- proach to power provision and financing and that means finding.a way to involve a variety.of interests and ensuring as many of those interests are satisfied as possible. As it is, one mining company, NovaGold Resources, has bought Coast Mountain Power, a company which wants to generate hydro power from the Iskut River. It plans to build a line from its planned Galore Creek cop- "per and gold mine site to the. powerhouse stemming from the Iskut development and then down Hwy37 to Meziadin to hook up with the B.C. Hydro grid. NovaGold officials say they need power to, match a mine~ construction schedule leading to a 2011 production start up. - .
