B6 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, October 8, 1997 New Hospice coordinator wants to GIVING CHOICES back to the dying and their families, That’s Terry Gordon’s goal as the new coordinator for the Terrace Hospice Society, Gordon just took over the job from Diane © Mac- Cormac, who was with the Hospice Society since it was formed in 1994, Hospice plays a unique role in the“ ‘community. Volunteers take >on - the demanding task of comfort- ing and helping the dying and their relatives, As the population ages there’s going to be even more call for hospice ser- vices. oO ‘Sometimes it’s just hav- ing someone. there to wake up to,” says Gordon. , Other. times’. volunteers write letters, read- books. or even bring treats, like ice cream. ‘ Gordon thinks one of the most imporlant things Family A VERY good friend has Ieft us, Gladys May Hales passed away this September after an operation. Gladys was born on Aug. 29, 1905 in England, grow- ing up in Alford, Her father ran a fish and chips shop, so it was no sur prise when Gladys went on .to work as the head cook at the Alford Grammar School, It was then that Gladys met her husband George Hales. He was working at a ‘men’s clothing ~~ store. ‘George was a iall, dis- tinguished looking man. George and Gladys had ‘three sons: Derek, Peter and ‘John. ' All three boys were born ‘in England, with John ‘finishing his schooling in Terrace. ' In 1957 Derek and his ‘wife Beryl and. their nine-': +month-ald baby. Susan’ im- Migrated to Canada. , ' Derek had just $80 in his ‘pockel when he arrived in + Vancouver, and no job. | Derek’s brother-in-law | Frank Brooks was working ;on a ranch in Aslicroft, so ‘Derek contacted him. From ‘there he and his wife moved ‘to Cache Creek, where Derek got a jab as a finish- ‘ing carpenter. ' In 1958 George and -Giadys and son John came ‘over to Canada to join give the dying choices Terry Gordon hospice can do is give a dying person control. That might be as simple as telling that person he or she doesn’! have-to be in the hospital. “They should know. they have more options than get- ting sick, going lo the bospi- tal, and dying,’’ said Gor- don. Other things dying people can contro] are the people with them at the end, and what type of intervention from hospital staff. “is wanted. Gordon has a background in nursing, both in the hos- pilal and at the health unit. She’s worked as a coor- _dinator for: Ihe: pregnancy. outreach program and prenatal program and now wants lo: explore the other side of the life cycle. And, as her new job and family allows, : she’s also studying for law school. There‘are about two dozen volunteers regislered with hospice right now, and an- other two dozen just com- pleted a training course, But Gordou ‘points out that those : volunteers’ might not all- be ‘active at the same time. “Some clients might take incredible amounts ‘of time and energy,’’ she said. Volunteers often needa fow months off tao recuperate from that experience. But the help the volunteers provide is immense, said Gordon. ‘We get very positive feedback from =~ the families,’? she says, ‘They often tellus, “You made the difference. You helped us get through this.’.”’ . Gordon. hopes to continue to see: the propram grow, However, it relies on dona- lions and gets no core fund- ing. Still, she’d like to sce Hospice getting involved more in helping-the dying to move out of hospitals, when appropriate, ‘For example, the socicly could help organize small group homes for the dying, perhaps staffed by a-24-hour nurse. ; “IPs something we can work towards, ’’ misses Gladys Hales HERE 'N-THERE’ YVONNE MOEN Derek and Beryl in Cache Creck, Gearge got a job working in a building supply store and Gladys went to work as a chamber maid. In 1964 Derek moved his family to Terrace and he be- came the foreman for Acme Glass and Miliwork. A year later George and ‘Gladys: followed. They be- came...cayetakers...at the Keystone apartments on Scott Ave. George and Gladys moved back to England a few years later, . but sadly George passed away in 1974, Gladys then moved back to Terrace to live with Derek and Beryl. No, the problem ls that the eggs In Canada is a regulated product. Alberta doesn’t want too many hens producing too many eggs. Otherwise. . the prices will get too low.” : ; “So why should there be fireworks tomorrow?” Arthur wiped the perspiration off his brow, : — - “Because we have 6000 hens and we're only allowed to have 300l" - Arthur was right.
