THE 20TH Century is
thought by many of us to be
the highest point of civiliza-
tion. As humans we under-
stand ourselves like never
before in history, going
right down to our very
atoms.

Science and technology
have enriched our daily
lives so that we would be
lost with it. I am struck by
the contrast of our seeming-
ly advanced state of living
when it is compared with
how many other people live
out their lives in the
twentieth century.

This contrast in people’s
lives has been brought home
fo me by a fax that I recent-
ly received about the Inter-
nalional Day of Prayer, to
be held on Sept. 29, 1996
from the Persecuted Church.
The overview statement on
the fax was rather bricf and
to the point.

It was felt by the Reli-
gious Liberal Commission
of World Evangelical Fel-
lowship that a day of prayer
should be called for, on ac-
count of the persecution ex-
perienced world wide by
those who have a faith in
Jesus Christ.

I was aware of some dif-
ficullies that others experi-
enced in communist coun-
tries where religion was
state controlled. But the big
surprise was held for me in
some of the trends about
persecution. Let me share
some with you now.

There have been more
people martyred for their
faith in Jesus Christ in the
20th century than in the pre-
vious 19.

According to World Mis-
sion Digest, there arc some

100. milfion martyrs in this
so-called “civilized”
century, More people have
died in circumstances re-
lated to their faith in this
century than in alf the wars
of this century combined.

My intention in this article
is not to slam the technol-
ogy of this century, for Tam
thankful for many of the ad-
vantages that it
There is one thing that
puzzles me though. Why
docs the message of Jesus
Christ so threaten the world:
that it responds by produc-
ing martyrs’ in such mass
numbers?

‘Fox’s: courageous joumey,

and how it touched the life

ofa Terrace girl,

Terry Fox was diagnosed
with bone cancer in 1977,
and his leg was amputated,
During his stay in the hospi-
lal, he decided to run across
Canada to raise funds for
cancer research,

The run began in 1980 in
Newfoundland and Terry
ran across six provinces.

But after 3,339 miles and
143 days, Terry bad to stop
running outside Thunder
Bay, Ontario, because can-
cer had spread to his lungs.

Terry Fox died’ in June,
1981, one month short of his
23rd birthday.

Around the same time
Ruth Pousette, daughter of
John and Evelyn Pousette,
was inspired to write this
song. The song was sent to
the Canadian Cancer

Society and to the Fox fam-
ily.

Ruth Pousette is now a
music teacher and vice prin-
cipal of Gilmour school in
Burnaby, She teachers
music to kindergarten to
grade seven students.

The song she wrote so
many years ago still has the
