In the morning, the bathroom is all
business, accommodating a two-
career couple getting ready for work.
simultaneously. At-day's end, it takes
on.the character of a mini “spa,”
functioning as.a much-needed retreat.
And of course, it needs to present an
altractive face to any guests who
might use il.

No wonder, a thoughtfully
designed, well-equipped bath offers
an excellent retum on the homeown-
er’s investment: Creation of a mas-
ter suite, with oversized bedroom,
private bath and walk-in closet, will
return 85 percent of the homeown-
er’s investment in the first year,
according to Remodeling magazine.

If an updated master bathroom is a
lop priority, here are some ideas
from Joe Ruggiero, design consul-
tant and spokesman for the Kohler
Coordinates program. Kohler
Coordinates is a comprehensive bath

leading manufacturers of bath and
kitchen products.

« Two lavatories. Having two
lavatories in the master bath elimi-
nates the morning bottleneck in the
bathroom shared by a working cou-
ple. Beyond the basic two lavatories
in the vanity, there’s been a move-
ment toward separate his-and-hers
grooming areas, cach equipped for
the individual’s specific needs.

Ruggiero says.

* Separate luxury shower. The
separate shower is the newest must-
have item for the well-equipped master
bath. Our hurry-up lifestyle demands a
quick in and out of the shower. But we
still enjoy our little indulgences. and
now, custom shower configurations

‘patterns and intensities that add fun

and massage to an everyday shower.

* Pressure balancing shower
valves. The most important part of the
shower, the pressure balancing valve
(which is required by code in many
areas), prevents unpleasant and poten-
tially dangerous hot and cold surges.
These valves provide an added mea-
sure of safety by automatically com-
pensating for pressure changes that can
cause temperature fluctuations.

¢ Water-saving plumbing prod-
ucts. The °90s are the green decade,
and a new federal law, which went
into effect on Jan. 1, 1994, requires
manufacturers to produce only
plumbing products that meet strict

waler-conservation requirements.
Installing water-saving: toilets,
faucets and showerheads is an easy
way to save precious waler without
changing your lifestyle.

* A bidet. .Common in Europe, the

bidet is handy for. foot baths and -

other localized cleansing as a water-
saving option to drawing a full bath.

* Attractive, functional acces-—

sories. Plan for an adequate number
of conveniently placed towel bars
and rings, and think about such con-
veniences as tumbler/toothbrush
holderg and wire baskets to hold
bathroom paraphernalia. Mirrors are
essential for grooming, but they can
also be used fo brighten a room and
give the illusion of a larger space.

* Easy-care surfaces. No one has
time for lengthy cleanups, Ruggiero
says. Durable, low-maintenance fin-
ishes like ceramic tile, the new solid
surfacing materials as well as natural
stone, treated woods and washable
paints, wallcovering and fabrics, will
make it easy to keep your dream
bathroom locking great with a mini-
mum of effort.

* Whirlpool bath. What used to be
only a luxury item is now an expected’
